I have the large Fender 2x12 cab and a 1967 silverface Bassman head. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with using Webers in a closed back cabinet. I would like the bad as well as the good experiences. The models mainly in question are:
50w Blue Dog with a 75w Silver Bell
50w 12F150B
12F150 50w
Chicago 12 80w
My styles range... mellow jazz, older country, twang rock, blues, rockabilly, punk, ska, reggae, Americana, rock(everything from the 50's to date)... I like later break up with sparkling highs without shrill ice picking. I want a pronounced bass response but not with too much boom and a healthy portion of mids for smooth punch.
If you have had good/bad experiences with other makes/models in a 50 watt Bassman closed back 2x12 cab let me know.

Webers -- both the alnico and ceramic versions -- seem to be at their best in an open-back combo cab. I have two of those big-box Fender cabs. I put a pair of Eminence Swamp Thangs in one of them and it's pretty punchy with the matching '67 Bandmaster head. The other cab is now configured as a bass enclosure but at one time I had a spare pair of Celestion V30s that I installed -- those sounded mighty beefy, almost like a Hiwatt with Fanes. The Celestion Gold is also a fine speaker but I have yet to hear them in a bass-reflex enclosure so I'll reserve my opinion for a later date. Likewise with the Tone Tubbys -- they do sound great in a combo though.

Whichever speakers you decide on, you may want to experiment with the fibreglas sheets in the cab -- some drivers like the extra damping while others prefer maximum interior volume for full unbridled cone excursion.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

About 5 years years ago, I went through a friend's DRRI (new 'lytics, better tubes, re-bias, and changed speaker). I squeezed a Weber 12F150A (no dope) into the cab. After breaking in the amp (about 2 weeks of daily use)---that amp sounded oh so good.

For whatever reason, that speaker and thse tubes had the best synergy. The amp sounded like a well oiled original mid-60's BF. He still uses the thing on nearly a daily basis. Gigs every weekend, usually at "7" or higher. When I play wih him I use either my Matchless Spitfire or 1965 BF Princeton Reverb in a 12-inch cab. So, the amp is very reliable and consistent in tone.

The amp sounded good with changed tubes & 'lytics with stock speaker. But, went a good level or two up with the Weber. One note, this speaker took awhile to break-in to final tone. Just for your information.

Gain stage tubes: Philips Miniwatt ECC83 and ECC81's (1960's vintage)

Rectifier: Mullard GZ34

Power tubes: RCA gray glass BP 6V6GT (1950's).

All power supply, bias supply, & bypass 'lytics changed to Sprague Atoms.

I originally had a Lopoline 2x12 open back cabinet with a pair of 30 watt Blue Dogs in it. I really liked the sound but... they broke up way to soon and lacked projection. They were shrill at times and sometimes lacked bass. I could see it working for other styles of music but not the direction I am in. I picked up an original large 2x12 too match the drapes... It came with what I now know to be 1 oxford and 1 Utah Alnico, witch I'm assuming is one of the originals. The cab sounds good, but it lacks character. I wanted to stick with Weber but I am more then open to other products.

On a different note I also have a Super Champ XD for small gigs/practicing at home. I replaced the stock speaker in it with a Warehouse Guitar Speakers G10C about 5 months ago. I was slapped in the face on how well it opened up that amp WOW!!! I get complimented on my tone and people always look confused when they see whats behind me. Makes me giggle

I was reluctant on trying the clones that they sell but after gigging with the WGS I would like to know if anyone has experience with the Veteran 30 and Reaper 30?

My 65 Bassman cab houses a pair of Weber 12F150's, lightly doped. I installed the 25 watters for a little earlier breakup. The amp is never dimed so the 50 watt total works for me They sound phenomenal. They won't disappoint............ 8) Mike

Very happy with the Weber California ceramic 12's with the aluminum dustcap - these are as close as you'll get to the JBL D120F. Great sound.
