Hi - does anyone here have experience with using a step-down transformer, for running a US amplifier (110volts) on the mains in the UK/Ireland?

I've just bought a 1974 Bassman head from a store in the USA, and I know I'll need a transformer for the mains, but I've seen them advertised at different wattages (45w, 100w, etc.) so I just need to know which is the best/safest one to use?

Thanks in advance guys.

A 240V/50Hz to 110V/60Hz step down trans at 300Va or larger will do the job for you. Art

Twins run about 500W @ 120. Twice the voltage half the wattage. So 300W should do it.

You might want to take a look at, www.tlc-direct.co.uk . There are plenty of companies to choose from, but they're local and seem to offer a good product. Good hunting and pickin'. Art

I should have mentioned this - it's a 50 watt head, so does that mean a 200watt transformer will do the job ?

Simian, the 200 watt would work as long as all remains constant. The 300Va gives a reasonable safety margin, in case of fluctuations.

Simian, guess I a wasn't real clear. the Bassman uses 200 watts of power from the wall outlet to produce 50 watts at the speakers. Transformers can be designated either by the watts they will supply or volt ampere. So a 300watt or 300Va trans is the right one for your amp. Art
