I have a chance to buy a 73/74 Bassman with the original 2-12" cabinet. I'm told the speakers are the originals, but when I open it up what am I looking for? What's the wattage and ohm rating supposed to be? Also, how would this cabinet fare with my '74 Dual Showman Reverb? Thanks!

Bassmans from this era had 15-inch speakers with the OEM options being Utah, Eminence, CTS, or (as a remote possibility) Oxford.

Look for inked EIA manufacturer's codes somewhere on the frames or magnet assembly......

Utah: 328-7XXX
Eminence: 67-7XXX
CTS: 137-7XXX
Oxford: 465-XXX

In all cases the speakers will be 8Ω and wired in parallel for a total impedance load of 4Ω. Expect these drivers to be rated for 30 watts each.

I wouldn't push your DSR too hard with that cab.

HTH

That's interesting, Arjay. I thought they kept a 2X12 in the Bassman line-up a lot longer. I knew the cabs were enlarged, but I thought it was just for show. Guess it makes sense, given the era. Too bad the speakers aren't rated at a higher wattage. Were those cabs ported ? Art

The Bassman had been upgraded to 15's in early '68. The only piggyback Bassman equipped with 12's subsequent to that was the Bassman 100/135 with the tuned-cavity 4 x 12 enclosure. The Bassman "50" began shipping with a reduced-size 2 x 15 cab around 1974 -- it was relatively square in proportions, with the speakers arranged in a staggered/offset array. This reduced-size enclosure was also used with the equivalent-year Bandmaster Reverb, with a pair of 12's in lieu of the 15's. I don't recollect if the newer/smaller Bassman box was ported or not as I've seldom seen them (I suspect that they were though).

Look for the date on your speaker. It tell if they are the same year as the amp 73/77

For information Jensen speaker code is 220 if you read 220543 this mean Jensen 1975 or 1965, 43 th week of that year

Same for all manufacturers as Retroverbial wrote

Jensens would be only an extreme possibility, Stratele. Fender was pretty much done with them as an OEM vendor by the late '60s. The latest examples I've ever seen were a few Princetons and Princeton Reverbs from early 1969 equipped with Jensen ceramic 10J4's.

I was quoting Jensen as an example only for identifying dates codes.

Indeed. And your explantion of how the codes are read is extremely helpful. I forgot to mention the method of deciphering the dates those EIA numbers correspond to.

Thanks!
