Hey guys,
I have a '67 Bandmaster head (AB763) and when I click the bright switch up or down it makes a loud pop. Any ideas as how to fix this?

Thanks,

Jeff

I'd investigate for the possibility of a weak or defective tube in either the V1 or V2 position, depending upon which channel is affected.

Tip - don't use the bright switch on the Bandmaster. It's bright enough without it. With the bright switch on, you're just making folks ears bleed a little more.

That said, I agree with Arjay.

I didn't find the Bandmaster bright, but then again my other amp is a DRRI :)

I don't use the bright switch with a Strat but if I plug a 335 or another guitar with a humbucker I do use it...

Same here, CB.

I would first try some contact cleaner on the switch body. If that doesn't help, then the 120pf cap has probably gone microphonic. The cap could be replaced with a silver mica type but a good guality ceramic cap will be closer to stock and less glassy sounding. If you don't know how to discharge the filter caps, the job should be left for a tech. These switches are located on the input grid of the second gain stage. So given that, some noise at switching is inevetible, unless the volume is down or the amp is in the standby mode. Art

+1 Aclempoppi for the contact cleaner with lubricant

Ya, I changed the cap on the vibrato channel switch (new ceramic) but get the same pop out of both the second and first channel (which I left the original cap on).

I will try the changing tubes and the contact cleaner first....

I like the bright switch for Bold As Love (JMayer blues trio) sounds on the strat but definitely have to balance out the treble knob when the bright switch is engaged.

Thanks guys!

I don't know of many folks that use that Brightness switch in the "dull" position. Maybe on a Twin Reverb loaded with JBLs? Anyhow, you can get the switch at Antique Electronics, if it still makes noise after contact cleaner.

Playing live with the Weber California 12's (very close to the venerable D120 JBLs), so I do leave the bright switch off, even with humbuckers. Tone is great, and 50' out doesn't sound shrill to the audience.
