Andy -- like I said in the build thread, this head is a dream. Been searching for one of these for years, but I didnt want to pay the high premium for a vg-mint. I lucked out, man -- It's really perfect. I'll post some photos of the general clean-up I did on her this last weekend.

Once I get my guitar build done, it'll pair up wonderfully with this amp :D

Getting the amp ready to take in for a complete check-up. I decided to take look inside....

The trannies look good and they don't smell of burnt electronics. The caps also look real nice, like new in fact. No evidence of fluid leak or bulging/corroding ends. The circuit board looks OK -- hard for me to tell with this stuff. Some of the pots look beat up, too. The volume pots are pretty crunchy. The tubes look good, but as we know the 6L6's are not matched. Still this amp sounds great!

While I had it apart, I spit shine the chrome parts and tolex and fixed up the valence 8)

Your right. Nothing sounds like an old Fender tube amp. I refinished a '62 bandmaster a couple yrs. ago that I had actually found. Over a couple yrs. I replaced the cabinet, (the one I found was poorly homemade). Put new Tolex, replaced the tubes, new oxblood grill cloth, dog bone handle, new knobs, Fender flat logo and replaced the caps. So, so sweet. I was in no hurry, and just kept looking for stuff on ebay. Probably invested around $400 in parts and labor, but well worth it. Looks like it just came out of the factory. Go for it, look at it as fun. P.S. If you re-Tolex think about using "Tite-Bond" works great There are also guys online that will pretty much walk you through the whole restoration.

It's been a while since I've been here at the forum. The guts have all been tuned-up. It needed new filter caps and some new output tubes. It's a heavenly peach. Warmth to the Nth degree!! I left the cosmetics as it looks in the photo. I love it!

Find yourself a "tailed" logo for the speaker cab to match that of the head.

What a swell looking rig!

You rate it, sir.

BTW, what speaker enclosure is that? And what speakers are in it?

Regards,
Roger

OK – Now, here’s a story for ya…

This cabinet is the bottom half of an old and long since departed 1973 Fender Quad Reverb (There is a story with the upper half…). I replaced the tolex and grill cloth and added a handle. The speakers are 1970's Fender Special Design blue-backs. 16 Ohm’s each, wired for 8 Ohms. (I know – the amp head is rated at 4. But my tech has told that will not be a problem with the circuit…)

I have been thinking of moving these out for a couple or maybe three 10-inch Jensen Vintage SD reissues), because I’d like a bit more pop. Otherwise this is a smooth slab of vintage tube crème…

The 16-ohm speakers are likely leftovers from the Quad Reverb "donor".

I doubt you'll be happy with any of the import Jensen re-issues.

Take a look at some Webers instead.

Yes, the 12/16-ohm's are from the Quad (which became a Twin or as I called it a "Quin-Reverb")

I will look into the Webers. 8)

EDIT: Any recommendations on the best ones to look for ? :D

12A150's or 12F150's. Mebbe even a 50/50 "mix". The "Chicago" model is particularly tasty.

Not sure how I missed this thread, but that is one fine job you did. If you really want to go with three 10's might I suggest some CTS Alnicos. They have a nice top end and punch to em. Webers aren't bad, but if you want go with new speakers, go with Kendrick Blackframe 10's, they cost a bit more than webers, but IMHO they are a superior speaker.

Again, nice job on the amp!

Tony, Blackframes are great speakers. Either 10 or 12-inch. BTW... a friend built a 4 X 10inch cab using Celestion G10 Greenback's. These sound pretty good, too. Very cool, vintage tone. FWIW
