Since I have the amp he expects me to make an offer. I don't want to insult him, but the numbers don't lie. I wonder if he'd take an Epiphone Valve Jr. in trade?

You don't have to insult him. Just be honest. Tell him that you've figured out what it will cost you to get the amp in shape. Let him know what ones in decent shape are going for in music shops, ebay, craig's list, etc. and taking all those things into consideration, what you believe is a fair price.

If honesty is insulting to him, so be it. There's no reason you should overpay so that he won't be insulted.

Well, I took the amp in. The owner looked over the amp -- He said considering the condition, he would not recommend more than powering up the amp to determine what was working properly, and what needed repair, pending a complete overhaul. All thing considered, he suggested I offer $100.

Nothing better than to add a little love and knowledge to restore these great amplifiers. I wish i could have 100 of them in my house

We settled on $125. Looks like I have myself a new project!

Later I'll post some photos of the amp in it's current state

I bought mine for $250 and for a total of $750 have the bandmaster you see below.
Here's the link to how bad it was when I first got it.

Nedo is correct -- old Bandmasters never die.

I turned a '68 silverface head into this 2 x 10 combo screamer......

They're great amps with lots of modding potential.

Yep, I think you've made a good choice ! I too, have a BF Band Master, a '67 model. Over the +20 yrs, it's had plenty of my attention lavished on it. IMO They are great amps ! And as you might have noticed, there are plenty of folks here to help you get that amp up to it's full potential. Good Luck ! Art

Wow! I hadn't even considered turning the head into a combo. Some very nice work shown here! At this point my plan is to bring it back to life as a version of it's former self.

Stock restorations are relatively painless -- I've done several of those as well. All it takes is cognizance of the detail differences and knowing where to get vintage-correct replacement parts. Likewise, altering an amp's cosmetics to represent a different era are also possible. I needed a custom-formatted tube chart for that brown "Pro" combo conversion and none were available so I learned to lay out and print my own. If you get stumped on something, give me a holler via PM.

Best of luck, HTH

Thanks Arjay -- Can't wait to get going. First thing I think I'm going to do is get a three prog power cable and reroute that ground from the caps to new cord.

That and some cosmetic work. The tubes will need updating too. I'm sure I'll have plenty more to look at...

Indeed.

Safety, reliability, and operational issues should come first.

What I can see of the guts looks clean. I have the front panel which was in pieces (I've already glued it back together) and the logo badge, which is a bit worn. How would I determine what year this is?

I've seen a lot worse, believe me.

That isn't bad at all.

The tube chart says it's a '67, completed in June -- which makes it one of the last blackface Bandmasters to leave Fullerton.

I have some other information which may be of interest to you (see me "after class").

Very nice amp Koz ! The choke and output trans show the usual heat related signs, melted varnish, but are probably just fine. The power trans looks good from the pics, no rust on the laminates. If there is a little rust, don't try to remove it, just leave it alone. Sure like those power tubes. If they match to within 3ma at idle, the amp will have a neat texture. Mixing brands isn't a common practice, but can be done with great results. Art
