Any of you weekend warriors cover this song? Any tricks to getting that crazy-GREAT dissonance sound of Robert Fripp? Other than stealing his fingers.

Sounds to me like he's using maybe a LPS through either a 6L6GC or KT-88/6550 amp, pushed to breakup. Is there such a thing as a "Robert Fripp" stomp box (I wish)? Any special tuning?

I've asked around and never really got a good answer. Thanks!

Yep, for intro, fuzz, small amp 1 10" or 1 12", ROOM MIKED from opposite side of room. At start of verse, same setup with flanger added, mike closer to amp about a foot or two. Liberal use of editing was done too.

To duplicate the sound, you will need to set your effects with a tight slap back delay with slight reverb, add fuzz, or use a trebly distortion setting.

At start of verse, use the same setup but this time add a flanger and turn delay off but keep the reverb on.

The delay and reverb will act as your room ambience. Adjust the flanger to match the warble speed and depth in the recording.

Thanks! I went to an "ace-axe" friend's house who sed he could emulate Fripp on "Fashion" using delay set at minimum slap-back. It didn't sound right. Anyhow, I gleamed ths off Wikipedia, FWIW:

" Robert Fripp used two Revox reel to reel tape recorders to achieve very long delay times for solo guitar performance. He dubbed this technology "Frippertronics. "

Now to find two Revox recorders in good shape.

I'm Sorry, I did not explain about the regen setting for the delay. It should be about medium setting. You can get that sound with digital. Only the purist will notice the difference. I play that song in a cover band and everytime there is a musician in the house that asks how I do it.

I use either a Boss GT-10 or depending on my mood, a Line6 X3 Live. Reason is, they both have dual signal paths and you can set two separate identical delay effects, detune them which can give the impression of "two Revox reel to reel tape recorders".

You can do this with a good multi-effects unit, but you will need to adjust carefully.

Yes, Fripp did (as well as I) used analog tape effects which were great in the old days. I read he now uses digital to program sounds and effects, ease of transport, and to save time.

Very cool! Could you tell me the patch settings for that BOSS GT-10. I've actually had my eye on that processor for awhile. Got to admit Fripp get some of the most unique tones out of his guitars.

Thanks!
