We called 'em NPKTs "non-professional knob twisters". There is some very strange feeling that comes over some people when they see an adjustment, they just have to turn it. :(

I believe it's a relative of the emotion which compels people to gawk at a wreck at Talladega or plane crash......they just hafta watch.

Yep ! I remember reading one of Randall Smith's comments on this very subject, when asked why Mesa doesn't put adjustable bias pots in their amps. Art

That's true aclempoppi, Randall has some great knowledge, I have read just about everything that he's published. But if someone who doesn't know what he is doing will turn a bias adjustment, do you really think that he would put in the correct tubes, as not having a bias adjustment would dictate? Most people that I know that don't know about the inside of an amp, simply won't open it up, or even change their own tubes. Mesa's practice of setting the bias correctly to begin with, means that you have to use the exact same tube for replacement. That is a fantastic idea, in theory. I guess that there are enough switches and adjustments on a Mesa to change the tone in a similar manner as the bias adjustment would? But, if you know enough to only install the correct tubes, wouldn't it follow that you would also know enough to have your new tubes properly biased? Maybe not. :? Hmmm, where can one get exact replacement tubes for a Mesa amp.......oh yeah, you must use Mesa tubes! (but they are just relabeled tubes, like most others) Seriously though, it does make it simpler for most users to just replace the tubes with the same brand only..... I guess. Fender does this with their Groove Tubes, recommend replacing with the same tube, so no adjustment necessary......but they give you the adjustment also. :)
