Allen, as much as I like Weber's products, I would purchase components from www.tubesandmore.com, or www.angela.com, or www.mouser.com. IMO you want to at least use mid grade components in this amp. The filter caps are no place to skimp ! I don't mean to sound like a parent, but this is just the way I see it. Art

+1

Weber is the last place I'd buy filter caps from.

I'm not familiar with Weber HV lytics. I usually use Sprague ATOMS. Who makes these caps for Weber?

Thanks!

Sooo...after research, I went with Art's recommendation to buy from Antique Electronic Supply at http://www.tubesandmore.com the gentleman was awesome, very knowledgeable and helpful. Spraque Atom caps are huge, 1" x 4"... he recommended Illinios caps. Decided since I am fixing this me me to play and am taking out the OEM's, I will get these. Should be here Friday. Will keep you posted...)

Thanks again,
Allen

That should be a good decision, Allen. I've been dealing with AES for over 25 years, good company to work with ! BMW, Weber uses sources from overseas, the quality is questionable. Maybe a capacitor thread is inorder, but I don't think we have enough folks interested in the subject. BTW Have you investigated the current method of forming caps ? Maybe another thread subject ? lol....forming caps?? so sry..am totally ignorant. Dad was a TV/radio technician 25 years ago...but I don't know much. He is planning on helping me a bit with the project. I am guessing it is shaping the pigtails in a manner that wont damage the cap ends?

Thanks again,

Allen

Allen, my question about forming the power caps was meant for BMW, since he mentions it often. Unless your dad has a variac or if he thinks the bedding-in of the new caps is necessary, don't worry about it. The new caps get a guick charge at the factory and are self-healing. I'm sure your dad will know what's best ! Two of my tutors for ampology, were TV-Radio repair guys. These guys know the ballgame ! Art

Didn't mean to ignore your question, but I did. The forming or bedding-in of the power caps, refers to the electrolytic part of the cap. It's kind of like the lead sulfide plates in a battery. The unit needs an electrical charge to form it's retension ability. Like lead plates submersed in sulfuric acid , that doesn't make the battery function. It needs an initial charge to start the chemical reaction. My analogy may not be spot-on, but the electrolytic in the cap does need an initial charge to form itself into a uniform working membrane, inorder to fulfill it's intended purpose. It's just the method that I was talking about. Art

Art, Thanks, for answering the "forming caps" question. Yea, that's what I take is happening. It's an electrochemical reaction of the electrolyte solution and the plates of the cap. Specific to 'lytic caps. Very similar to car batteries. Good analogy!

FYI: This is a good source of Bassman output transformer. I've used this OPT in several dual 6L6GC amps (like Bandamsters, Supers, Pro) with good success.
