A guy on my local Craig's list is trying to swap 4 Fender "Special Design" 12" 16ohm 50W speakers from a late '90's/early 2000's Fender FM 412 cab. These are the exact size, wattage and impedance I am looking for for my 85W Silverface Showman cab project, but I know nothing about these speakers. Info on the web seems conflicting-some say these were made by Eminence and are the same as the 1258s, some say they are Fender Oxfords,
some say they're cheaper Jensens, and some say they are super-cheap Chinese Eminence/Jensen knock-offs. Does anyone have any info or experience with these these speakers? Thanks for any help! O.

Every OEM speaker that I've ever seen in a "Fu-Manchu" (aka FM-series) amp has been a chicom-made POFS.

Caveat Emptor!

Thanks for your response Arjay, you are fast becoming my Idol! As you have no doubt guessed from my previous posts, I am something of an electronics novice/idiot. I wonder if you can help me matching amp power ratings to speaker wattage ratings. The DSR is 85W and hardwired for 4ohm output. I am planning to install 4 16ohm parallel wired speakers in a 4x12
cab to match impedances. How does one determine the necessary minimum/maximum wattage handling capacity of speakers for this set-up? I've seen recommendations that each speaker should be able to handle 85W+ (e.g., I will need 4 100W speakers), but have also been told that the total of all speaker wattages need only add up to 85W or greater (e.g., I will need 4 speakers of 25W each). What is right here? How do I match speakers and amp while avoiding damage to either? Is there a rule of thumb here? Thanks for any and all responses! O.

Despite its 85-watt rating the DSR -- when dimed -- is fully capable of producing 100 watts, driven only by a "dry" guitar signal. Thus, you should plan your speaker complement to that end. Each driver should be capable of handling the entire output in the event that one or more of them should fail while in use.

The "ultra-linear" variants (rated at 135 watts) will require even higher power-handling caveats regarding speaker selection.

You can drop me a line off-board for more particulars if you wish......

Thanks again, sir. If I have any more " I should have known that" questions I'll be dropping you a line. Gratefully, O.

Incidentally, your DT412 cab is designed for front-loaded speakers only. Be sure to pick up a front-loading gasket set for each of your speakers if they are not already configured with them. They're relatively inexpensive and can be found on Ebay.
