The Groove Tube 6L6 (sometimes referred to as a "6L6GT") may be used in lieu of a 6L6GC. However, there are better new-production tubes available.

Best of luck, HTH

Ok gang I know I already posted this, but the best 6L6GC-type tube that I've used in the last 5 years is the 1980's production of the coin-based 6P3S-E (or 6N3C-E). It's plug-&-play for any 6L6GC amp. The best source is the link. He culls out the bad tubes, matches, and tests for quiet use. He's very good to deal with. Email him with any concerns. His price (so far) is $26.50 per matched pair. $54.50 per matched quad. Very reasonable.

These tubes are TOUGH. They they awhile to break-in. About the same amount of time as the 1990's St Peterburg made Svetlana (=C=). Which I consider one of the best 6L6GC variety ever made. They have a slightly better midrange than the Svetlana. And can be biased a tad cooler, because of this (the warmer tone).

Many audio folks have been replacing their vintage EL34 units with this tube. It's kind of a trend right now, in the audio world.

Check about 1/8-1/4 down the "old-school" page of info on buying this tube:

Of course NOS RCA and Rayteheon BP's are better. But, at today's cost a quad of NOS will be a LOT. And the quality of those NOS maybe questionable, at best.

I posted this option, mostly because I've had some issues with new JJ power and rectifier tube QA.

Well, sorry to upset your cart. I will leave this post alone.

And I thought audio guys were elistists.

Mil-spec NOS bottles are the most durable tubes that anybody's money can buy. Service life can exceed fifteen, even twenty years with reasonable precautions.

How many sets of JJ's, TAD's, or Sov-Teks would that equate to?

And at what cost?

Yvanico, there are guite a few 6L6GC current production tubes available for your amp. I would not recommend a 5881 or 6L6GB designated tube, unless the specs state that a 500volt plate voltage is OK. Brand names can be confusing ie; Sovtek, Electro-Harmonix, Tungsol, Svetlana are built in the same Russian factory, but to different specs(or so it is claimed). JJ Tesla are built in the Slovak Republic, SED(winged C) are built in St. Petersburg, Russia. Shuang is the premier Chinese tube builder, but there are a couple more. Companies, like Groove Tubes, TAD, Ruby, and Valve Art buy stocks from the various manufacturers and sort, test and grade the tubes for the retail market. Sometimes the origin of these tubes are made apparent to the buyer. IMO All this sorting and testing is a good thing. But there is a cost. Independent tube vendors will also test the very same tubes at a lower cost(usually). Their testing equipment may not be as elaborate as the larger companies, but their reputation is on the line and some are absolutely anal about what they sell. A little research should give you a good idea of how this works. Good Hunting ! Art

Art's posted some solid info regarding new-production glass. Let that be a worthy guide.

Those new production tube companies are smart, everytime I see that Tung-Sol box,it makes me want to buy those  .....theres so many things like that now that we could mention and what's a shame is that many people think it's the same companies still building the tubes and speakers and stuff, because of the brand names...that couldn't be farther from the truth.
