Hi!

I am a German Kid about to buy the aforementioned Amp (Bassman 70 from 1982 "Second Edition" Blackface).

I play Bass, well I am a beginner :D

So my first question would be - do you think it is a good one for Bass?
As I understand the Amp is "Ultra Linear" - thus canceling the harmonic overtones - is that true - do I need to bother?

I am very curios about that "Second Edition" Blackface thing - is it just cosmetics or is something VERY good???

If I buy it, I would love to know how to put the Cabs.
I know for the Bassman 100 it is: Internal parallel, so always 4Ohm (separate or together)
and for the Bassman 135 it is: Speaker only 4 Ohm, ext. Speaker 8Ohm and together 2 times 4Ohm for intern serial 8Ohms.

So, whats the clue for the 70?

Thanks a lot in advance
Best regards from Germany,
max

Hi Satz and welcome to the forum. I would suggest jumping over to the Bass Amplifier forum and get those guy's opinion. But yeah, it should be very much like the basic 50watt Silver Face Bassman. Looks like it has a line out and the ultra linear OT might be very cool for reasonable volume levels. Just not sure! Art

Just don't expect 70 watts from this amp (or 135 from the Bassman 135).

The best I've ever seen these amps produce was a skosh below 60 watts under bench-test conditions (around 118 watts for the 135).

The blackface cosmetics are merely that -- cosmetic only. The amp's a silverface through and through.

Best of luck, HTH

Hey Arjay, checked the schem and each speaker out says 4ohm min, but since they're parallel, isn't the combined output looking for the 4ohm load ? Try not to sigh to loudly! Art

Indeed, Art.

The ultra-linear amps of that era all had output trannies with multiple secondaries and self-switching speaker jacks. The primary needed to see 4Ω but a 4Ω or 8Ω load could safely be used in the extension jack.

I always felt safe using a Bandmaster or Showman cab with my UL Twin Reverb for that very reason.

Thanks, Arjay ! I know you've talked about these amps before, but my memory didn't hold on to it. So the Bassman would be a pretty versatile amp for Satz, given the possible speaker combination and the line out, right ? From studio to coffeehouse to larger stage use ? Art

Indeed it would Art, but only with a carefully selected speaker enclosure. Fender's standard bass-reflex configurations have never been sufficiently deep enough at 11½ inches to credibly propagate a long-wave bass note below around 65 Hz. And I say that having all possible respect for those cabs when used for guitar. The best bass cab from the SF era was the 4 x 12 version developed for the Bassman 135. That "pyramid" variant made volume you could feel and unlike folded-horn W-bins and such, it also produced sufficient stage volume as well as projecting out into a crowd. I wouldn't put the amp/cab combination in the same league as the Acoustic 370/301 or an SVT but it sounded down-right meaty -- very similar to a Sunn 200S.
