FYI: I've been using these tubes for some time now, in my restorations. Been getting very good matched, quiet ones from this source ($26.50 matched pair). I bias them about the same as NOS 6L6GC (maybe a tad less). Rugged & last a long time. You can find the tube info about 1/8th of the way down the page.

Hey BMW, those sound like interesting tubes. When it says "coin-based", are we talking about the actual tube base ? In otherwords, the claw tube retainers would have to be changed to the"top-spring"type of retainers ? Art

Art,

The clips work ok on these thin coin-based tubes. In fact they slip right into the groove between the plastic and the glass indentation, so the clips actually hold the tubes pretty well.

Hi-fi guys run these tubes at ridiculous plate volts and idle bias currents, say, to replace amps that took 7581A OEM. Sound not too bad in these apps. Not the headroom of the 7581A, but not bad.

I've used them in Class "A" single ended amps. Sound pretty good. Better than Svetlana (=C=) IMHO, in SE setting. Really, for the price worth a try. One note, these are tough tubes that take a bit to break-in. So, they'll sound a bit "constipated" at first. Give them a good week of hard use. Then, they'll start relaxing.

If you decide to try a pair or quad out, post what you think. Be much appreciated. BTW... I have no connection to the seller I posted. I just found him much better to deal with, than ppl on EBay selling this tube. His matching & ferreting out DOA's, etc is pretty darn good.

Good luck with them!

Thanks, I wasn't sure what that meant about the base. Probably try some of his phase inverter tubes, seems like he does some thorough testing. Yeah, maybe give the 6P3S-E pair a try. At that price, why not ? You got a couple of Matchless amps ? My all-time favorite amp was a Clubman-35. Used it for years in a blues band. Art

Art, Sorry about the poor description. On my BF Showman and Bandmaster with stock OEM clips, the clips touch the shoulder of the coin-base... right where the glass of the tube indents inwards. The point of the edge of base. In other words, the clips work fine.

BTW.. the seller's JAN-Philips 12AT7WC are nice, hardy reverb tank tubes. FWIW.

Art, Yeah I have a Matchless Chieftain and a Spitfire. Both are tone crazy monsters. With the best trannies I've ever had the pleasure to play through. The Chieftain is a 1992 model and the Spitfire is a '93 I believe. I run 1960's Mullard EL34 (xf2) in the Chief & 1980's Tungsram EL84 in the Spit.

Luckily I bought a whole bunch of Mullard GZ34 back awhile. And a slew of 1960's Philips-Miniwatt & Mullard ECC83's. So both amps have a distinct early British tone. Celestion Vintage 30's.

That Spit is one of the best dang 15 watt amps. It ALMOST made me retire my BF Fender PR. But, for tonal variety I use both. Lugging those Matchless around is something. Not exactly "portable."

Really, too many toys. I that's just the amps. Don't get me talking guitars....

8^)

The Clubman was a'95 with Vintage30 2X12 cab. Yeah used a Mullard GZ34 and United Electronic EL34's. The reason I decided on that amp was because it sounded more like an old deep Fender, than my old Band Master or Twin Reverb. I checked out a number of old Super Reverbs, at the time , but they lacked the depth, I was looking for. Let the amp go after the band broke up in 2008. I plan on building a 2xEL84 Train Wreck or Matchless clone, but a Princeton Reverb is also in the running. Art

Art, Don't know if you've had a chance to go under the hood of a Matchless. But, they have some of the neatest layouts. All point-to-point. Only amp that I've ever worked on which was more impressive were those old Hiwatts. I think they were built to mil-spec standards. Sure makes working on them a whole lot easier.

Have a good day!

Yeah, that rail construction and painted solder joints are a couple of the reasons I chose the Clubman. Don't have central air, that design is excellent for the humid months. Only got into mine for minor cleaning and the checking of component values. Never had the need to repair in the 8yrs. of use(just tubes). Had a Tremcat in for a bad volume pot,but that's another story. It had quite a few Matchless branded caps and similar parts. I've only seen pictures of the old Hiwatt and the newer Joyce amps. I'll build my amp on a board similar to the Hiwatt, instead of rails. Art
