I am working on a (pre-CBS) '64 6G6-B 50 watt bassman head (brownface circuitry, blackface faceplate). It's been sold here in the Netherlands and was covered in horrible black furniture skai. The grill cloth has been sprayed over with black car paint. I found out that the grill cloth is gold sparkle and that my amp was probably a smooth blonde with gold sparkle cloth. I have been told that this was an initiative of European importers to have blonde Fenders sprayed black or asked the local furniture maker to cover them in common black furniture skai.
Luckily enough I managed to get some reissue gold sparkle cloth for the head and a replica 2x12 speaker cab. The baffle has not been painted and it results in very strong contrst with the speakers with the cloth on top of it. Did Fender give the baffle a paint job to camouflage the speakers a bit? If so, what color, black or grey?

Baffle boards and valences were always painted black on every blonde piggyback I've ever examined (both the inner and outer surfaces). The staples used to attach the grill cloth were black-lacquered. Prior to late 1962, when Fender switched from plywood to MDF particle board for baffle boards on the brown Tolex combos, those were painted on the grill cloth side only.

Do you've a couple of photos from your amp?

Due to summer holiday, I did not spend much time on this project.
A friend does the retolex job for the head in the coming weeks.
Once finished, I'll upload some pics.

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me where you managed to get your gold sparkle grill cloth as I have been having difficulty sourcing it and your amp looks fantastic , any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Take a look here, listed under grill cloth, tolex, piping. I believe it's just called Wheat cloth but maybe not the same.

They do have the gold cloth listed seperately here but it is expensive.
