I've heard a Super Reverb recently and really liked everything about it. I'm not sure of the exact year but it was a blackface.

I live in an apartment and don't need the volume. I don't tour. I'm just looking for an amp to record with.

I'm not knowledgeable of Fender amps. Is there anything out there with all of the features of the Super Reverb but ... small?

For recording, it's hard to go wrong with a 65 Princeton Reverb Reissue.

You listen to Supro......he's got college!

Seriously, you'll not be disappointed in the Princeton Reverb -- either an original or a re-issue.

Looks to be in the right price range too. I'll definitely look into it.

Cheers

Any blackface/silverface head amp can get there - Bandmaster, bassman, tremolux, showman.

These amps sound great at loud volumes, but they also sound fantastic on 2 - you don't need to crank them to get the goods like a plexi.

If you want more power tube interaction, you could add a speaker attenuator, like Dr. Z's Air Brake/Brake Lite to tame the volume - it's what I have. Or, go deluxe and get the Palmer PGI03 - it replaces your speakers with a resistive load for silent recording.

Ok so if I understand this correctly, I could use the air brake/brake lite with the super reverb (it is within the 45 watt limit) and get the high volume characteristics at a low volume?

That's probably not the avenue I'd take anyway but it would make my options flexible for sure. And if there was ever a need for the high volume it would be there sleeping.

Sitting up front to a mammoth amp like a bassman would be fun. It wouldn't be unlike staring at a pollock painting that produces sound :)

you get a lot of the sound, although there's less speaker interaction since you're working them less hard. You also will wear out power tubes faster.

However, few can crank a Super Reverb or any 40 watter full out these days, unless you're on a 40' stage or live in the middle of a farm, or have a recording studio.

Try to purchase one from a place you can return it if you don't like it.

Any attenuator will colour the sound. Some worse than others. I'm pretty sure the Marshall Power Brake was the worst one ever made. If memory serves I think the THD Hot Plates were reasonably translucient but no attenuator will be completely transparent.

I own several BF amps, and they all sound similar at low volumes, not exactly, but very similar...so to get a tone that's driven to a little breakup,I would say the Princeton Reverb as well.
It's been a studio favorite for years because it's the smallest of the BF amps with reverb and tremolo/(vibrato).

I do love my Princeton reverb as well as my Princeton - great for those Fender cleans. Good to have amps from all the tube food groups.

Don't worry about silverface vs. blackface - there's not much of a circuitry difference between Princetons when they changed. You'll need a new electrolytic capacitor can as it will be due.

Tubes - I really like my Mazda NOS 6V6 in both of mine.

Tonequest also had a fun article about hopping up a Princeton Reverb that I followed called Under 40 Watt of Whoopass that details how to really get a wolf in sheep's clothing. Since mine was a pull-boost Princeton Reverb, I had no remorse in doing these mods.

http://www.tonequest.com/articles/article2.htm

Good luck.
