I love vintage Fender amps, mine are BF DRs,a BF Pro Reverb with one '62 Brown Princeton, but lately I feel the need to find a tweed Deluxe 5E3 or maybe a Tweed Pro,probably narrow panels.
With all the 5E3 clones/kits and whatever out there, should I just try to find one of them? I've given thought to building one,I do work on my amps ,so I could figure it out,but still it would be new with new sounding components...not the vintage sound with the component drift and all.
It will be used for rehearsing and small blues gigs,I prefer the Deluxe over the Pro....maybe....I'd have to see what it could do.
So long story short,I could afford a good tweed amp,if I can find one,but how close does the Victoria or Fender new tweeds sound in relation to a vintage one?

Mission, Weber, and other companies offer some fine kits that build into pretty good sonic replicas of the vintage tweeds. They don't appear to be overly complex as far as assembly goes -- all that's needed is some fundamental understanding of basic circuitry, a few common tools, and a decent meter. I've heard a few of these completed kits and aside from the fact that a new speaker is often used, these clones sound pretty close to prototype. They might be just the ticket to put some tweed into your amp arsenal without busting the budget.

Thanks Retro,I had seriously thought about building and for a lot less money it could be a fun thing to do,I'm used to working inside my amps and it's always interesting...it seems the most logical way to go.
I had just wondered how the kits sounded,I think I'll try it.
My first amp long ago was a tweed Champ,I really can't remember but I think it was a 56/57,a great sounding little amp.....I've always regretted letting it get away.

Same here. Now I mostly enjoy just building repro cabs and restoring the old rigs.

Drop me a PM off-board and I'll pass along some additional info which you may find helpful.

I have one of those and it's cosmetically challenged, but what a great sound. One of these days I hope to make it look better.

Don't change the looks! As long as someone didn't take a krylon can to it, why bother? There are plenty of brand-new looking tweed champs on the planet, but yours has character and age - plus if it's sounding great, why bet on part of the amp's mojo?
