..so we're playing the other night, and in mid song no sound is coming out-Amp is lit up, I hooked a different speaker up to the amp and it was OK. Apparently either the Voice Coil or the speaker itself fried-Mu guess is the former-It's an original JBL-Any thoughts on whether I should replace the coil and with what kit? Or go with an all-new speaker and keep the old one for vintage sake (I may be convinced to sell it-I like my '72 Pro Reverb as much or more).

Sounds like an open voice coil to me. Have the speaker re-coned using the appropriate aftermarket E-series kit. These parts effectively double the power-handling capability of the older D-series speakers.

Now that I look at it, I realize it isn't a JBL, but an Oxford or a Jensen. May not be original. Same deal?

I would have the original re-coned regardless of brand.

Jensens will be marked "220-XXX" somewhere on the basket/

Oxfords should have "465-XXX" on the basket or the magnet.

Thanks, Ret...I'm thinking you are to amps what SMark and Martian are to pickups. It is an Oxford, as I recognize the "465" prefix.

I know a little, I reckon.

You might consider upgrading from the Oxford to a D130F JBL. I put one in an over-sized custom cab for my Deluxe Reverb re-issue......it made all the difference in the world. The 22 watts now sounds closer to forty. I call it the "Spankmaster Reverb". Save your original Oxford for "posterity" of course.

I am mulling that over-There's a really good speaker repair/sale shop around here that would do the work or get the speaker--Thanks again.

I don't think there's a sweeter-sounding 15-inch speaker than a D130F......

Arjay-I checked my speaker-it is solid black with a couple of holes in the cone area that have a red ring and, I think, a white one. The serial # is X15T8(or B)XK289. There was no cabinet plate in the back when I got the amp, so I am thinking it is not the original speaker. Boo. Do you have any idea what kind of speaker it might be with that kind of serial, whether it might be a CTS or Jensen? I doubt that is JBL (I'd be delighted if it was) as they are usually grey-colored. Thanx-B.

The full EIA manufacturing code will tell you when that Oxford was made -- but that wouldn't necessarily indicate whether or not it was original to your particular Fender amp. But you can compare that date with the EIA codes found on your amp's trannies and pots to see how well they jive (or not jive, as the case may be).

Jensen and CTS were also building contract speakers for Fender in '64 -- thus, it's also possible that one of those was the driver installed before the amp shipped from Fullerton. If your primary concern is authenticity then you should use a Jensen, Oxford, or CTS (all of them their ceramic versions) dated no later than December of '64. Either of them will be period-correct. OTOH, if your primary issue is tone and playability then find a cosmetically-decent D130F and -- if necessary -- have it re-coned by Ron Neal in Sacramento or Orange County Speaker Service out in L.A.
