Hello, Got a chance to trade 2-15" JBLD140f"s [OLD/OLD}from a Sunn 2000s cab, FOR A PAIR OF 12"re-coned, JBL123's to be ,maybe installed into a 76' twin. I must confess that I have pretty much have only used JBL's in all of my systems, and have had zero regrets! Arn't the123s not only rated for 20 watts? but yet, It seems a lot of people use them[carefully!] they seem to be a popular speaker for the Fender vintage tube amps. With the ultra-linear, 130watt Twin Reverbs? Is it really ok to use these speakers? Although my 15" d140's are probably in need of re-coning,And the dealer/re-manufacturer says, he is just buying the frame, and mag, what should I look for? impedance? cost equity, and,so on, I have heard that the123's are very susepteble to moving/jarring, types of damage, treating them like they were made of nitro glycerin? I really don't beat my amps around anyways! can you give me some idea? I have heard the EV's,,even older types, are quite compatible. thanx!!

The D123 can trace its lineage back to a full-range hi-fi speaker dating from the late '50s. Later, Sunn asked JBL to produce a version suitable for guitar which they offered as optional equipment in their 4 x 12 Sceptre cabinet. In its musical instrument guise, the "D123S" offered the familiar JBL tone and voicing but was not nearly as robust as the purpose-designed 12-inch D120F. Many players favor the D123 for low-to-mid power applications (5E3 Deluxe, Pro Reverb, Bandmaster, etc) but for a mega-watt monster like an ultra-linear Twin you'd be much safer with a D120F or a K120. The original D123's were good for about 25 watts continuous -- reconditioned with the standard E-series coil-and-cone kit doubles that to around 50 watts.

I'd go with Weber's ceramic California 12's with the metal dust cap. They sound great, are as close as you'll get to the old D120's, and they will take your amp on without problems. I'd save those lower-wattage speakers for a Deluxe, Princeton, etc. or make a fun low-wattage extension cab.

FYI - the silver dustcaps from behind the grille on my Bandmaster combo are said Webers.

Hey Ric, I'd try to barter or sell the 140's for some thing closer to what your amp needs. Maybe Arjay can give you an idea of what they are worth. Don't think you should compromise on this. Just my opinion. Art
