I have recently acquired what was has been presented to me as a 1968 Fender 2x12 Bassman cabinet to pair with my '66 Bassman head. It is said to be a transition cabinet built to blackface specs (?). Its in amazing condition, with the original 2 x 12 Oxfords which are in fantastic shape. It has the pine sides and the standard blackface particleboard baffle, but what I do not know about is if the particleboard back it has is also original (?). Do most later blackface Bassman cabinets have particleboard backs? thanks!

All vintage piggyback amps regardless of the era had baffle boards and back panels fabricated from ½" MDF particle board. Your Bassman is indeed original.

Curious as to why you would say a particleboard back is best. Is it for the original vintage vibe?... because to be honest, I would rather have some aged pine in there. Also some of the best vintage repro cabs. are built with plywood backs. Thanks again.

My BF combo amps all have the particle board,I have a '62 Brown Princeton that has a plywood baffle that is painted black.
I've wondered about the backs but have never owned one...interesting.

Leo selected particle-board for the piggyback baffles and back panels because at certain low frequencies plywood tended to generate unwanted (and audible) resonances when the amp was driven hard.

Plywood was used for baffle boards in all combo amps up until around mid-62 (the "brownface" era) when they too were switched to particle board, probably as a cost-saving measure.

+ 1 Retroverbial

Is good to know that we should not use particle board for cabinet or baffle. This kill the good tone.
