Thanks, Retroverbial. I only started this project in order to find out how many of my Princeton Reverb II were made. After the initial puzzlement of finding serial numbers which were hundreds of thousands apart, I quickly discovered that if you follow "all" the range's serial numbers sequentially from earliest to latest, you get some Super Champs, then some Champ IIs, then another model, then another, then some PRIIs, then another type, then some more Super Champs.... and so it goes on through over 100 batches which between them cover the 14 amp types over 1982-87. So to find out how many were made of one type, you gotta collect'em all. I currently have over 1000 serial numbers, most with some associated date codes... I really should get out more....

I have been to your Princeton Reverb II shrine for this Rivera Amp many times...I own a very clean and well taken care of PR II that I bought really early 1985 new from my friend Jimmy Agnello Mgr. at the Paul Ash store in Brooklyn N.Y. he became a Sales Mgr In California for Sam Ash...he called me and told me to come to the store...walked in, he tells me I must buy this Fender amp...one day it will be a classic...last of the point to point hand wiring ...designed by Paul Rivera to compete with Mesa Boogie...the whole deal...amp wasn't selling well in the store...amp sales were never good enough...cost way to much to make and wasn't enough profit in the amps for the store to keep them in stock...he really loved the amp...he was thrilled I took the last in stock model for myself...showed me the importance of learning this amps features and tweeking them...I still find new sounds this amp can produce ...wrote you an email a few months ago at your site...I thought you packed it in...glad you didn't...your work is finally paying off ! PR II's are popin up everywhere...please if you can my amps serial # is F325226...I never new the year made...Thanks

hi creamstp

thanks for the extra detail - I'm reading this after emailing you back - and I'm sorry I never saw your email form some time back, thanks for persevering... as I emailed, your amp is from Jan 1984 give or take a month.

Anyone reading this with a different amp type from the Rivera-era, don't try to 'date' your amp from this info - the serialisation doesn't work that way....

:-)

Aside from the example shown on page 343 of Tom Wheeler's "The Soul Of Tone" Fender amp book, I've never seen one. Apparently, most of the Rivera-era Showmans built were the 2 x 10 and 2 x 12 configurations.

I have seen exactly one, the son of the music store owner I worked at played one. It was one loud son of a gun. He used it in a heavy metal band and it sure seemed to work for that type of sound. I would guess that they are relatively rare, as so far since 1985 I have seen just the one.

FWIW

Do you happen to remember what speaker was installed in that Showman, T2?

Was it a Gauss PS15 or an EV?

It was an Eminence Speaker...Ceramic Magnet with the blue round label. If I remember right a JBL was an optional speaker for it.

T2

Edit...did some rereading and it was during the Rivera era (circa 1981) that Fender Changed from Pyle speakers to Eminence at the behest of Bill Hughes...according to the Book "The Fender Amp Book" by John Morrish. The amps during this time had the option of EV's in addition to the JBL's. And as to my comment on remembering the Showman was loud...yeah it was 200 watts!! OUCH MY EARS!

Lester, I'd love to have the serial number for those 5 Showmen! My research so far says they only made about 1200 Showmen, all configurations. In 8 years of collecting info only 12 Showman owners have checked in with me and only one is a 1x15.
