Hi, got one for you! came across a late 70's twin, it has no power, about 8 watts of distorted out put. the push-pull does not seem to make any difference in any position. no reverb, no obvious damage. The tremelo works, if you can believe it! It even has the footswitch. the person who I had aquired it from said that the power tubes were new, and that an amp tech checked it out to be in proper working condition, hah! any ways, with this little diagnostic info, can you guys give me any idea what I might be up against? thanks again! you guys are the "Fender Docs"!

Hi there Ric, guess that I'd start with the speakers, their wiring and connections. You might want to remove and insert the plug at the rear of the amp a few times to clean off any oxidation(this wouldn't hurt the reverb cable plugs either). If you have some contact cleaner, the plugs and the tube pins could be sprayed and reinserted. Even without the cleaner, the tubes can still be removed and reinserted. I'd give the volume controls a few turns to see if they're dirty. Lastly, I'd try swapping V6 with a good tube. A 12AX7 will work here, but the 12AT7 has a higher current capacity, making it a real solid driver tube. Any way good luck, and if you can check those speakers with another amp, that would be best. Dear Art, thank you once again for your fender intelect, and also your kindness as treating me [a new bee] with the gloves that you wear, yes I have tried the in- out rubbing oxidation thing, and for the friggin life of me I guess that I will never learn my lesson, buying amps on-line, but, there are no Fender people in my area. So the temptation strikes, and you think your getting a great deal, and boom.. theres something wrong with the thing! The guy says he will make it right, but, I thought that I would seek your opinion [over any one elses!] first. I have a new 12ax7 in box, what socket is the one that you are talking about.[ looking at the rear of the amp] ? thanks again, man you truly are a life saver and a friend on-line. You ever consider writing a book? Ric

Hey Ric, you're welcome to any help I can provide. The tubes are usually numbered from right(V1) to left, as viewed from the backside of the amp. The tube I was talking about, is V6( phase inverter). The tube to the right of the power tubes. If both channels are reacting the same way, then this tube may be the culprit. Art
