Those are nice. I miss the old Sound Rocket. AKG was an awesome company back then.

Old age setting in. The Sure mixers were black with aluminum front. Altec Mixers were green.

Bogen actually made a good amp for the time. As did RCA. The problem was getting the plug in transformers to switch between Hi-Z and Low-Z

Actually looking at a pair of D1000E mics now. Just need to make up my mind.

I think those Sure mixers were M68. Good but no eq at all back in those days.

I had an Altec 4-channel mixer with an advertised 75 watts! What a monster.

LOL I guess so. The ones I used were preamp only. A stack feeding a pair of fischer amps.

After our battles with the Bogens my Dad built us a nice Dynaco Stereo 70 power amp. It sounded downright beefy with our pair of Altec A7's.

Those were the days :) And again, no monitors. Had to really work it back then if you were on lead vocals.

Hi Folks...

I just unearthed an old but working pair of Fender Solid State column speakers, (the really tall thin cabs) and I thought I might connect them to a Trace Elliot bass head with graphic that I have, or if that was useless, a Marshall 80/80/ valve state power amp.

I thought to try the power amp and cabs with a few different pre-amps (ADA MP1, Peavey pre, Pearce pre. ) etc. plus other pre-amps that I have laying about. ( All in search of yet another another interesting and possibly somewhat vintage guitar sound.:-)

Does anyone know what the speakers inside are, and the speaker impedences?? The backs of the cab says 8 ohms each, and I think they have 4 x speakers (Jensen ??) inside?? Would be grateful for any help / advice / info... I think I remember opening them up about 20 years ago and that there were eliptical speakers inside :-)

Do you think they are worth building into more traditional-type geetar cabs.. ie. A stereo rig L. & R.cabs, with 4 x speakers per sealed back cab. I would re-use the old handles and the corners and maybe even the badges :-)

regards

Fender built several permutations of PA columns over the years, beginning in 1967 with a 4 x 10 arrangement. These speakers were invariably CTS alnico's, each of 32Ω impedance and wired in parallel for a total load of 8Ω per column.

I have used these speakers in traditional guitar cabinets after re-coning them to the more common 8Ω configuration. They sound exactly like the CTS alnico's as used in Fender's Super Reverb Amp. They're my favorite 10-inch driver.

Hi Arjay.

Many thanks for your help. I tried the cabs yesterday with my trace elliot bass amp and some effects, and they sound excellent!!

However, they are so long, laying on their sides, that it's a bit difficult to determine where the sound's coming from :-) Thanks also for dating them for me.

I'll get them built into two smaller 4 x 10" cabs, drive them with a stereo amp, keep the speaker impedances as they are, and re-wire them as original at 8 ohms.

Have you fitted your's into sealed enclosures, or open back cabs?

best regds

I use these alnico CTS speakers in open-back combos such as this Bandmaster conversion that I reconfigured into a 2 x 10 brownface combo......

I bought a matched triplet from an Ebay vendor and had all three re-coned with 8Ω 25-watt coils (the remaining speaker awaits a home in another forum member's '64 Princeton Amp). They sound bright and punchy in this application -- much like a blackface Vibrolux Reverb.

I don't know how they'd fare in a bass-reflex (sealed-back) enclosure but I'd surmise they'd sound pretty good. For a 4 x 10 cab, the minimum internal volume for adequate cone damping would mandate external dimensions of approximately 26" x 26" x 11.5" or thereabouts.
