From all that I have looked up, my amp is from Feb, 1966. I can tell that the tubes have been changed, but one of the speakers looks different also. Were both speakers the same on this model? How much does it hurt value? Trying to figure out what I have.

Your amp's transformers should all be stamped with an EIA manufacturers code formatted thus: "606-6xx" or "6066xx". In the case of an amp built early in the year (such as yours) the fourth digit might in fact be a 5.

There *may* be a date ink-stamped inside the chassis

Original speakers for that era could've been either Jensens or Oxford ceramics. The Jensens will be ink-stamped "2206xx" while the Oxfords should read "465-6xx (the caveat regarding transformer dates may also apply here).

The knobs on the front panel should all be of the "snowman" variety (the "8" is shaped like a traditional snowman and the set screw is located above the "10").

Both of the tilt-back legs will be stamped "PATENT PENDING" and one of them will feature a serial number (not related to the stamped chassis serial)

Some pics would be helpful

Sign yourself up for a Photobucket account (it's free) and upload your pics there. Below each hosted image will be a dialog box with several posting options. Click on the third one (will read "img src" or something to that effect) and copy via your tool bar's "save" function. Then merely paste that URL into the body of a post on this or most any other discussion forum.

Thanks alot. Still learning. Although I think I have come to the conclusion that the speakers aren't original. Everything else looks right, numbers etc, but the speakers I think have changed.

Original speakers would of course be preferable to a collector. But I can tell you from personal experience with the VR they're not necessarily the best choice for a player.

One other brand of speaker Fender used was Utah...I have a '66 Pro Reverb that had them in it...they didn't sound very good.
You can figure those out by the codes also.

You might be right, RS. I've never seen Utahs in a BF VR but they could easily be correct as well. I think Utah's EIA code is "328" or something to that effect. The first use of Utah's I can remember were in some early SF drip-edge Bandmasters and Bassmans. They weren't very pleasing to the ear......

You guys are educating me. Actually, I have found that one of the speakers is Oxford. The other one is newer and not sure of brand. It is a great sound amp, either way. Clean, Clean sound.
Thanks for the help.

You're exactly right, the code for Utahs is 328.....and I was surprised and somewhat dissapointed that they were in there, even though I was sure I was going to replace them with Webers.
That was my first known experience with Utah speakers, they sounded thin, even though they were over 40 years old they were in good shape.

Indeed, RS!

The Utahs (as a line) were the most mediocre-sounding speakers I had ever heard. I'd liken them to the current Jensen "MOD" series......absolutely no redeeming social value.

I think the best stock Pro Reverb I ever heard (not mine) was a '66 with a pair of Jensen C12Ps -- warm, compressed, very articulate. The owner played a '64 ES345 through it and I thought it sounded like heaven personified.
