I have a Dual Showman head. I am curious what cabnet and speakers would have been original. What combinations were there?

Thanks for your replies.

A 2 x 15 enclosure was the specified cab for the Dual Showman amp.

The "small-box" version used during the BF era was oriented horizontally and measured 24" x 36" x 11½". Shortly before the switch to SF cosmetics (circa early spring of 1967) the box was enlarged to 30" x 45" x 11½" with the orientation changed to vertical. The tilt-back legs were deleted on this cab.

Those "big-box" Dual Showman enclosures that were factory-equipped with JBL D140F bass speakers (an available option at the time) featured a small rectangular port on the lower right side of the baffle board.

Chuck Berry uses BOTH Dual Showman and Dual Showman Reverb.

Image

BTW, for which reason ol' Chuck ran TWO Dual Showman Reverbs connected each other (as shown on the photo below) instead of using a single head/cab set? He found the tone not sufficient enough for his taste?

It's not. :? Just start a Chuck Berry equipment thread. I understand threads get hijacked, I'm guilty of it myself from time to time. But man chromeface, this seems to happen all the time with you. Tale, no tail, who asked about tails? Just try to stick to the op's question. The OP didn't ask anything about Chuck Berry or his equipment.

It just being respectful to the OP. Arjay's just being helpful and to the point. He's forgotten more stuff about Fender gear than I ever knew.

Hey Chrome, I usually read the original post two or three times, just to make sure that I understand the subject. Then, it's just a matter of whether or not I have any thing of value to add to the conversation, or maybe I'm just curious about the subject. IMO No one here is interested in curtailing your freedom of expression. No one here has that right! We're all just guests at this party. Maybe some pictures of the Dual Showman speaker cabs would be the way to go. This stuff really doesn't bother me, but we need to be considerate of everyone here. The guys are offering guidance, and so am I. Hope some of these words help! Art

Not necessarily a Chuck Berry equipment thread, but a good reference for an useful discussion.

I too dislike hijacking threads, but I desperately try to post a relevant question to add a nice context to an already existing subject, no else matters....

If I can figure out how to post it, I have a old picture of my "69 Dual Showman on a 2X15 bottom, and my '61 Strat hung on the front. Cool picture-all I remember about it was My Dad yelling at me to turn it down, and having to take out the backseat of my car to haul it around.

Kinda like this?

Image

I learned to appreciate the advantages of the earlier small-box Showman enclosure after wrestling a big-box cab into the back seat of my mom's '67 Valiant a few times......

The first Showmans ( those beautiful blonds ) were horizontal cabs that had either a 12" or 15" speaker, which could be upgraded to JBL's. The Double Showman, with 2 x 15' speakers, either D-130 or D-140 JBL's, were changed to Dual Showman in 63' ( the blackface era ). The large, ported cabinet came along in 67'. At that time, the bass payer in my high school blues band used a Dual Showman head with the smaller box Dual Showman bottom loaded with two JBL D-140's. Sounded great to use. Two cabinets would have been better though :)
The first group I saw using Showmans were The Beach Boys. Brian's were loaded with two JBL 15's.

As an aside, Carl was using what appears to be a Bandmaster and Al, a flip top Ampeg? Both had the stand alone Fender Reverb units

The only "big-box" Dual Showman cabinets (30" x 45" x 11½") to be factory-ported were those that were special-ordered with D140F bass drivers, which were a no-cost option.

As well, the first "formal" Dual Showman (where "Dual" was added to the front-panel nomenclature) was introduced in early 1967, to coincide with the introduction of the "big box" enclosure.

Prior to that the only way to distinguish between a 1 x 15 Showman head and that intended for use with the 2 x 15 cab was to check the part number on the OT. The single-speaker head (8Ω secondary) carried the part number "125A30A" on its tranny while the "dual-speaker" (4Ω secondary) model was stamped "125A29A".

Here are the Showman Amps as shown in the 1965-66 Fender catalog......

Note the lack of the word "Dual" on the 2 x 15 version.

yep, the middle one was what my bass player used, along with an early 60's precision bass. What a sound!
