Well,

Thanks for the great comments and advice. I just wish there was some way I could verify that the transformers that are in there are interchangeable with the original parts. I need an un-biased opinion (no pun intended). I can't understand how it is even working unless they are very close to the original spec. However, the hum may be the price I am paying for this.

thanks again

I still think the hum problem can be traceable back to bad filter and/or biasing caps. And regarding the replacement trannies, in technical terms this could be deemed to be an "upgrade" since that P/T is providing more voltage and more current than the original. Likewise, the O/T is capable of handling substantially more power than the stock Vibrolux Reverb tranny. Remember, the original BF VR was rated for 35 watts. With a SR power tranny and a B'Man output tranny the amp is now probably closer to 45 watts.

You might think you've got a "lemon" here but IMO it's an excellent opportunity to make some great "lemonade".

You may be right about the upgrades but I did buy this amp mainly for it's potential investment value, so from a collector's point of view not a good move. I'll keep everyone posted as to how this unfolds so that others can learn from my mistake. If I can save another unwary person some pain and suffering I will feel that much better. I'm on my way to take it back to the store now.

well, I took the amp back to the store and they checked it out and when they plug it in to there outlets the hum is barely audible and the thing is as quiet as a church mouse! So, I guess the problem is in my house wiring. Would a wireless house alarm system cause this? I have a relatively new home so? I do have a lot of wireless crap in here though. I have tried it in different rooms and still the same noise (hissing with a background hum) :?: :?: :?: :?:

It's certainly a possibility. Most if not all electric/electronic devices generate some sort of electro-magnetic signature and certain portions of an amplifier's circuitry can mimic a radio receiver, with a guitar's pickup functioning for all the world like an antenna. Thus, a television set, a computer and/or its monitor, a refrigerator's compressor, a wireless alarm, virtually anything can induce noise into an audio device. Single-coil pickups are more vulnerable to this than humbuckers. You might try switching off the various devices in your home one at a time to isolate which of them causes the offending noise. A Furman power conditioner might also help to suppress spurious signals if they're AC-line based.

Yep I have it plugged into a Furman SS-6B. I'll try turning things off one by one (if I can). I'm not sure i can unplug my alarm system becasue it is monitored. I'll have to check on that.
