I had discussed this briefly in an older thread of mine, but I've been super busy lately. Now things have slowed down a bit and I'm ready to make this happen.

Here are the details: I have a '71 Deluxe Reverb (Blackfaced) with an Eminence Legend that came in it when I traded for it. I've already sent an email to Weber, but I thought I'd get as many opinions as possible. I'm looking for an upgrade (thinking Weber) that will give me that signature, classic Fender tone. Punchy, yet clear and without super ear-piercing highs, and that will give me a nice crunch when the amp is pushed.

One last thing - what are the main differences between Alnico and Ceramic?

Thanks in advance!

The alnico speaker will generally yield a warmer, more compressed (ie: vintage) tone than the ceramic counterpart, which delivers a punchier, more in-your-face (ie: modern) sound.

Both have their assets, depending upon the amp, type and composition of the enclosure, and of course the player's picking style.

One of Weber's 12A50 series speakers would be a worthy candidate. You might also consider a Tone Tubby or even a vintage Jensen P12R.

I have Weber 12" ceramic speakers in all my BF amps, they sound great.
I think the last time I bought some they were the F150 s or something like that.I'll have to disagree with the last poster and say they do have a vintage sound and seem to mellow with age....at least to my vintage ears.

All speakers will age from new to varying degrees. However, once a certain "plateau" is reached their individual sonic characteristics are unlikely to be further altered. That's what makes a Celestion sound like a Celestion, an Oxford sound like an Oxford, and a JBL sound like a JBL.

One thing I always do if I buy a vintage amp is to replace the speaker(s) if it is original and save them. The '66 BF Pro Reverb I got a couple of months ago had the original Utah speakers, they didn't sound that great, but after putting the Webers in it's starting to really sound wonderful.

I don't blame you at all -- the Utahs were the worst-sounding OEM speakers to ever be used in a Fender amp......absolutely "no redeeming social value".

I went through a number of speakers in my DRRI before settling on a Weber California with paper cone. The cleans are exceptional and it handles any kind of OD/Dist pedal extremely well.

I always do the same thing. Take out the stock speakers and save them for both posterity and for future value.

Thank you guys very much for the responses. After reading through them and doing quite a bit of research, I think I am going to go with the 8 ohm Weber 12F150 50 watter with light dope.

Has anybody ordered Weber speakers pre-broken in? If so, how do you like them?

Well, my speaker came today and I just wanted to make sure that this looks right. I ordered it with light dope which appears accurate, but my concern is with the 2 large drips coming out of the center. They almost look intentional, but I'm really not sure they should be there. Can anyone help me out with understanding this?

Those aren't "drips", Zep Man.

They are the lead-in wires running from the speaker frame, through the cone, and to the voice coil. Trust me -- all is copasetic with your new speaker.

Enjoy!

Thanks you sir! I figured they were something as they definitely looked intentional. Just wanted to make sure as, in 10+ years or playing, this is my first speaker swap

Be gentle when mounting it. Lay the amp on its face and remove both back panels. Do not tighten the screws in concentric order around the mounting flange. Start with one, skip four, then repeat until all eight nuts are snug (this, to prevent warping the basket). And they only require 20-25 inch-pounds of torque each -- not much more than finger tight. Play the amp for a couple of hours then re-tighten the screws as before. You'll be fine.

I have used a Weber California 12 paper dome in my 60 watt Carvin X-Amp for 6 years and have been happy with it. I just got a DRRI with a Celestion alnico blue and can now A/B the Weber and Celestion in both amps. I must admit my jaw dropped when I heard how much louder the 15 watt Celestion was compared to the California. Not just a little, a LOT louder and clear. The hype about the blue seems to be true!

Yeah, those blues are amazing! IMO Webers excell at the "American" sound. The English built Celestions are quite a bit different(no experience with the Chinese variety). A bandmate used the blue alnicos in a DC-30 and Badcat for years. Man, I always had to dodge the front of that amp. I bet your amp sounds great ! The only Fender I've heard with an alnico blue was a jazz player friend, who used it in a silverface Twin Reverb with an old Jensen. Actually, that might be the nicest Twin I've heard, even compared to his old tweed Twin. Art
