Hi Matt, nice amp and I can dig the woody look(nice choice of grill cloth). The blonde and wheat treatment sure will be a classy look too. The Weber Vintage Series 10" speakers offer a great selection. I have a couple in a Bassman conversion 2X10 combo, also the blonde-wheat scheme. Mine are the 10F 150T, very good speakers after a good 20 hour break-in period. Good luck on the project. Art

If it were my amp I'd find a pair of vintage alnico CTS 10's as used in the Super Reverb and some Princeton/Princeton Reverb amps. They typically go for around $50 on the secondary market and after a quality re-cone (around $60 or $65 each) they'll produce that punchy and articulate tone that makes the older amps so desirable.

All grill cloth is stapled, Matt. If somebody glued that piece down, I can guarantee, it wasn't anybody at Fullerton.

Wood filler is fine -- be sure to sand it flush to the wood for a smooth appearance under the new Tolex.

The depression on the bottom of the head cab belongs there. Take a good look at how the old pieces of Tolex were glued on in that area and duplicate the method as best you can.

Arjay,

Thanks to your reply. I don't have the old tolex. Will the tolex for the bottom of the head be in two pieces? Surely, the tolex will not smooth down in the depression. Would you or anyone have pic for this part of the head?

Thanks

These may help, Matt.

The first pic shows the bottom of my '66 Showman head with the relief cut for the speaker enclosure handle still present. The depression was merely Tolexed over, using a single piece of material.

The second photo (shamelessly purloined from an Ebay listing and legally exempt from copyright restrictions under the "fair use" provision) illustrates a somewhat neater treatment of this detail. In this case, the amp is an AA763 Showman from late '63 and in its original blonde guise.

They may have used a heatgun to soften and stretch the Tolex to force it so sharply into the depression. Your '64 Tremolux likely looked like this when new.

First - Arjay - that's a great looking brown Pro Amp - I drooled earlier at your tolex re-installing. Great job!

on wood filler - get the highest grade you can. It looks like none of the spots are that big, so it's more cosmetic and to ensure that if you heat/apply the Tolex, it doesn't dip into a depression on one of those divots.

The depression on the bottom of the head cab is there for a reason - lets it sit on top of a cabinet with a handle without having to have taller sphinx glides (the silver feet). Do not fill it in, or you'll have trouble sitting it on a cab with a handle. you could probably shape a oval wood block, chamfered on the edges that you could use as a forming die to push it up cleanly, but I'm guessing that may be overkill...

I don't know if Arjay mentioned this before, but if you haven't ever worked with contact cement - best to try out on a piece of scrap wood first. I put a new convertible top on an old Fiat 20 years ago, and remember using the DAP stuff to attach the fabric to the headboard. Spread it on both sides, and waited until it was tack-dry. When I slowly put the two pieces together, it was welded tight and I would have had to rip it off to separate.

So, take your time and practice before you apply to your excellent Tremolux. It's looking great so far!

You're essentially correct about the relief cut for the handle, Nedo. However, the BF-style strap handle poses no problem -- it was the older "dog-bones" which were still in use with the blonde 6G(X) amps (and some black 6G6 Bassmans) that created an issue when stacking the head on the speaker enclosure. The "dog-bone" does not collapse flat like the strap handle. Thus, Fender's cabinetry crew provided a simple-yet-effective solution by milling a depression in the bottom of the head box to afford clearance for the handle. Unknown though, is why the practice continued all the way up through mid '66 (the "dog-bones" were long discontinued by this time).

Thus......another "Fender Mystery".
