I have a 1963 or 1964 blonde tremolux. I base the date on photo found on the internet. However, how do I confirm the age of my amp. I want to recover it with new tolex and a new grill cover. I got it when 31 years ago when I was 16 and it had been painted black. I stripped the cover and grill sanded it down and stained the wood. I want to restore it as close a possible. Thanks for all your help.

The tube chart inside should have two letters on it. (MO-NK,for example). What are they if you can make them out............ 8) Mike

That's the circuit type. It's just 2 stamped letters.

http://www.thevintagesound.com/store/gr ... -9_35.html Go here. They have the tolex and blonde era grillcloth. You can tell them the type amp you have and they'll help you figure how much you need,,,,,,,,Good luck.............. 8) Mike

For a full restoration you'll need the smooth blonde Tolex and one of two possible grill cloths -- either the beige "wheatstraw" with brown stripe, or the beige "wheatstraw" with gold sparkle weave. Mojotone has everything you need. Red-label DAP contact cement works well for gluing Tolex to wood. Look at some vintage Fender cabinets and note how the seams are over-lapped and how the corners are done. There are a few tricks to it but it's not rocket science. I've done several (both restorations and all-new builds) and they've all turned out pretty swell.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

My opinion, you make a mistake.

For collector you should have to keep it original,

Now he lost his vallue. He is not the one made by Leo Fender, too bad.

I don't think so by reading his original post - he got it 15 years ago and some idiot had already wrecked it by painting the tolex black. Depending on the paint, you can't just clean that stuff up and have it stock.

Plus, it's his amp, and if he wants to strip it and redo it, more power to him. It will still sound like a great Fender amp, and now it will be back to looking great vs. ugly.

Matt - if you can throw some before/after pictures up I know people would love to see them and see what you were up against. Good luck in the re-covering of the Tremolux!

Here's an old set that I restored last summer......

Image

The '66 amp head was in surprisingly great shape (Ebay purchase) but the Showman speaker cab (gift from my brother) suffered from 45 years of use, abuse, and general "road rash".

I play this amp out periodically, and no -- I don't think I made any "mistake" by cosmetically restoring the rig. It looks and plays just like how it appears......a mid-60s "NOS" Fender piggyback amp. And I've turned down offers for twice what I have in it.
