I'm having a hard time dating an old fender tweed speaker box. I brought it to "music go round" a store in Duluth, Mn. but they were baffled too.

It's a tweed 2x10 box with no serial numbers just numbers on the two CTS 10' speakers. On the back cover and inside the box is written"54" in crayon. My question is did Fender make an amp that was piggy back in 1955?

No production piggy-back tweeds that I'm aware of......are you certain it's actually a Fender-made cab?

AFAIK, CTS did not become a vendor to Fender until the mid '60s. Most speakers used in the '50s tweeds were Jensen or Oxford.

Both the mgr of the music store and myself are convinced it's an original fender cabinet. It's demensions are 17" high x 11 1/2" deep x 27" it has an oxblood or dark brown grill and allmost a greenish tint in the tweed.[/img]003.jpg001.jpg
It's only a speaker cabinet, not the amp. On the top od the box there are threaded holes like it was made for a bandmaster set up.

Oh, to post a picture it needs to be hosted on a website, like Flickr for example.

Then copy the link to the picture from that site, click the [Img] button, paste the link and click the [Img*] button again.

If you're convinced that it's a Fender-made cab then compare its exterior dimensions to all the tweed amps described here......

http://www.ampwares.com/fender.asp

If you find a match then you're on the right track.

First of all, what is your speakers dating ?
Here there are some informations about a speaker number write on the basket :220127.

For more information: go on Google and type:dating cts speakers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Speaker Codes And What They Mean

The picture is a section of the basket rim of a speaker. The 6 digit code indicates what manufacturer made the speaker and when it was made. It is called the 'Manufacture Date Code'.
Here is a list of some of the speaker manufacturers and their EIA codes:

Credence 117 Pyle 1098 Rola 285 Eminence 67
CTS 137 EV 649 Oxford 465 Altec/Lansing 391
Utah 328 Quam 270 Jensen 220 WeberVST 1279
Cleveland 433
More Speaker Codes Codes for Manufactures of Other Products
So, the speaker in the image above would have been made by Jensen (220) during the 27th week of 1951 or 1961. The year is confusing because it is only a single digit. In later years, the EIA converted to a 4 digit date code so the year could be easily identified. There are 2 acceptable methods of displaying the EIA date code, with or without a hyphen between the manufacture code and the year/week code. Some manufacturers also attached other letters to the end of the date code to indicate day of the week, work shift, serial number, lot number, etc. The EIA only specifies manufacturer and year/week code. Anything else is at the discretion of the manufacturer.
