Funny you should ask - I did this exact thing last year, although with a 1965 Bandmaster.

Newell amps (www.newellamps.com) is who I used, and he built a great black tolex cab that fits it perfectly. I'm sure JD could do it in blonde tolex/wheat grill if you'd prefer.

One tip - I asked him to paint the inside of the cabinet black vs. unpainted, but up to you.

I ordered 2 Weber California 12 ceramic with the silver dustcaps (their version of the JBL D120) and love the amp - it's the one below.

Lot of room on those inside walls, so I installed a Dr. Z Brake Lite attenuator, and now it's the perfect gigging amp for me.

Also added Fender tilt-back legs once I got it back; I believe JD can install these as well.

Let me know if you need more info.

That's pretty much the info above.

newellamps.com - for a bandmaster combo cab

webervst.com - for 12" speakers, although Scumback are also liked

drzamps.com - for Dr. Z Brake Lite attenuator

your existing chassis straps from your head unit will work fine in the new cabinet - it's really a drop-in type of job.

Tip - install the speakers first before putting the chassis back in...

Let me know what else.

I've re-cabbed a number of vintage Fender amps over the years...

Image

The brown "Pro" conversion is actually a '67 SF Bandmaster chassis in a 2 x 10 combo box. The 1980 Princeton piggyback is now powering a pair of 16Ω JBL K120s in a Showman-sized cab. The DRRI resides in a taller enclosure built to accommodate a JBL D130F. All were really enjoyable projects and they perform precisely as predicted (the '65 Princeton Reverb is unmolested save for a re-coned CTS alnico speaker and an added "standby" switch).

agree - those are fantastic jobs - great attention to detail. Would love to hear a Princeton through that extension cab!

You can make your Bandmaster into a 1x12, 1x15, 2x10, etc. The only limiting factor is the chassis width, which will dictate how wide your cabinet will be.

A 1x12 could be a great size and be a real wolf in sheep's clothing, so to speak; depending on your music, something like that 1x15 DRRI for a bandmaster may work as well with a proper 15" good guitar speaker.

Pretty much anything under the sun is possible. Just remember to "match source to load" when it comes to selecting your speaker impedance and the total load for any conversion. Most vintage Fender amps need to "see" 4Ω to develop their full power potential. Exceptions are the original brown- and black-face non-reverb Concerts and the Super Reverb which were designed at 2Ω and the single-speaker combos and the single-speaker Showman which require 8Ω. The Champ, Vibro Champ and Bronco were equipped with a 3.4Ω speaker originally but a 4Ω driver (or other alternate load) is perfectly fine.

Very nice piggyback head conversion!

The Princeton has been discontinued in 1979. None of these silverfaced combos were made in 1980.

Image

Princetons made after 1976/77 had a "scripted" tailless amp decal, with some variants having an orange sparkle grill-cloth. Subsequently, this is an early-to-mid '70s model professionally converted to a piggyback head with a matching 2x12 cab.

Yes, that's the conventional wisdom.

However, here's a pic of the OT in my Princeton...

Image

The PT is similarly dated and they're both original to the chassis, as are all the 1980-dated control pots.

And no, the amp isn't a 1970 -- it has the factory-installed 3-position polarity switch and 3-conductor primary power cable. The cabinet likewise was of post-1972 construction with a glued-in baffle and velcro grill frame. The original Oxford speaker dated to 1978.

Both cab dimensions are equally good.

So, if you decide to use two cabs together, I strongly recommend using the 1x12 cab for the top and the 1x15 for the bottom. Same thing as a silverface Super Bassman outfit (Super Bassman I and II).

Note: The Super Bassman I and Super Bassman II names referred to the number of cabs purchased.

You can also do that in the reverse order if you like.
