If you had to choose between the Rivera era Deluxe Reverb II or the Concert II versus the current DRRI, which one would you go for? Why or why not? Need some opinions (and the Youtube videos only take you so far). Thanks!

I have both Concert II (1 x 12) and DRRI. The Concert II has a JBL speaker, it is clean, bright, and loud. Although it has a distortion channel, I have not been able to select a suitable overdriven sound that I can then switch back to the great clean sound. I use a pedal to overdrive with amp. It is a PTP amp, heavy, sort of a 1 x 12 Twin Reverb sound, without Vibrato. Reverb is similar.

On the other hand, I frequently use the DRRI, and after many years of not using Vibrato, now use it quite frequently. I did change out the stock speaker and have a Weber Cali paper cone installed, really outstanding cleans. Again, I also use a pedal for distortion on this amp, and even with half the power of the Concert II, it is loud. Even with the Cali, it is much lighter and easier to transport. I have had it for >10 years, never any trouble with it.

I paid approx $600 for the DRRI, and <$200 for the Concert II. Based on today's prices, it really depends on what your willing to spend. Probably cover similar ground with both amps.

Thanks for the info Big F! When you said that you couldn't find a suitable OD sound to switch back to clean, did you mean in terms of lack of volume balance between the two channels or that the OD was lacking? The Youtube videos suggest that the OD channel leans much more towards "high gain" versus more "blues/classic rock Blackface break-up". Has that been your experience? Also, how does your DRRI keep up with a full band?

Currently, I'm using a '94 series (PR266, post-red knob series, pre-ProTube series) Twin Amp. Great sound, great versatility, lots of power -- but it weighs a ton (77 pounds)!! I'm trying to downsize my rig for gigging both power-wise and for weight. Any other thoughts?

Thanks again!

Matt

I never had any problem using a DRRI live, most times I could not get it to the sweet spot because I had to lower the volume and use a pedal. If not loud enough, which is unlikely for most venues, you can always mic it.

If I had to select one or the other, for most gigs that I use it for, the DRRI is more than sufficient, and lighter to haul. However, the Concert II has a larger sound than does the DRRI, sort of like a Twin with one 12', but given that it has the JBL, it has a lot of depth. Unfortunately, the JBL contributes significantly to the weight and although a somewhat smaller cab, it is approaching the weight of a Twin.

Again, I would select based on the venues you play, and best price, since in my opinion, these cover similar ground tonewise.

Thanks again for the advice Big F. Out of curiosity, what OD pedal(s) are you using with the DRRI?

Have used a Fulltone OCD and Fulldrive with comp-cut, but also get decent tone with a Boss Bluesdriver, although my favorite is a Reverend Drivetrain II, it just seems to work really well with the DRRI. If you have an opportunity to pick up a Drivetrain, don't hesitate.

Mdortona, I have a Deluxe reverb II and love it. I got it to save my back, my other amp is a twin loaded with JBL's ( weighs a ton ). The distortion channel is more high gain than overdriven power tube saturation. If you play around with it you can dial in some decent distortion, if not your cup of tea just use a pedal. Plus even if you don't like the overdrive sound you can still set the second channel different than the first to give you a different sound. There is a link to one of the members here using his concert II, sounds great. I played through old deluxe reverbs (not the reissue) they were great. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those amps, I'm just partial to the DRII.
