I believe CBS bought Fender in '65, so they may have started changing faceplates by the end of the month, but they certainly didn't change the circuitry in it that quickly.

Azar, I'm not good enough with computers to even get a photo, let alone a sound clip to this site. Ned, can't help you with the faceplate question. But the circuitry changes lagged behind the design dates. My early '68 Bassman has the AB165 circuit instead of the AA568. Maybe I should say, the implementation and production lagged behind the circuit design dates. IMO, making many early '68 Fender amps great finds. Art

Just to let you guys know I came across a 1964 Fender Twin Reverb for around $900. $1400 with shipping to UK!

Anyways:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320507828842

He says the output transformer may have been a replacement for a 1969 one (silverface era). The power transformer is 63' apparently. So it doesnt seem all original.

What do u guys think? Im no collector, but I am after tone. I wish I can buy both...

Heres the bassman:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220573612000&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

So you guys whats your opinion for the semi original 64 twin blackface or should I stick to the Bassman and buy a original twin a couple years down the line?

Azar, I like that Twin. It seems to have all of the right components changed, and the right components left alone( the blue caps in the tone stack), to make for a quiet players amp. If the amp and the RCA tubes can survive the shipping, the pre amp tubes would be the only issue for me. I guess the caster installation might be a concern, if the bottom board was chewed up or cracked. The output transformer should be fine, but it's something that you can change later, if you want. Like I said, it seems to be a good players amp. Art

Yikes, I hear the bassman has cleans similiar to a JCM800? Dont get me wrong my JCM800 is a great crunch amp but the cleans, were well, not that impressive..

So the Bassman cleans arent really the classic fender clean?

Azar, the Bassman has a different pre amp than say a, Twin Reverb, Pro Reverb, Deluxe Reverb, etc. So there is a certain sparkle that these amps can produce on the vibrato channel(with or without reverb). These amps have the notorious mid scooped tone stack(heavy highs & lows) with very little mids. The Bassman's bass channel is very flat and even, when compared to the other amps, very much like your Marshall. This is probably the comparisons you're getting. The normal channel, on the otherhand, is the typical Fender pre amp design, but lacks the extra gain stage that the Reverb amps have(which can add some sparkle). Did I use that sparkle discription too much ? But it is why the non reverb Fenders of the same era can sound smoother. Hope this gives you some idea of what you could expect. Art

Thanks aclempoppi and everyone for your help so far.

aclempoppi whats your personal opinion on which one I should shoot for? I know maybe we have different tastes and tone quests, but for what Im looking for what would you recommend from your experience?

Whichever amp you go for, shipping will be key. Some thoughts to ask the seller to do:

Remove all tubes, wrap and package separately. Nothing worse than getting an amp with shattered glass inside.

Wrap the amp in stretch wrap plastic, bubble wrap etc. completely so that the amp is sealed. If the seller is using foam peanuts, this is critical, as the UPS foam peanuts contain static electricity and will get stuck in the deepest nooks and crannies of your amp. This happened to me with my Princeton amp and it took several hours and pulling the chassis to get all the pieces out.

Double box the amp. Place the box in a sturdy cardboard box, then place inside another box that's 2" bigger at least on all sides, filled with packing peanuts.

What are you doing about the 120v vs. UK 240 volt? I'd want to make sure that i had something in place that worked well for vintage gear as opposed to a consumer electronics adapter - last thing you want is to spend that money and plug it in and have it fry...

Good luck!

Azar, I used an old Twin Reverb(AB763) for years in a blues band(rhythm, double stops, lead fills, etc) with a Strat and Tele. You mentioned that you were looking for that" Fender clean tone for blues, mellow stuff." I think that the Twin Reverb would be a great complement to the JCM800. My only reservation would be the chance of damage in the shipping. Art

I'd be inclined to go for the Dual Showman as I was never fond of the Twins of that era.The Showman to my ears is a much smoother sounding amp plus with the wonderful cab you already have it would make the Showman shine then you also have the advantage of better portability.
