I’m having a problem with my 1966 Super Reverb. . It works as long as iI keep playing but once I stop, it starts to oscillate. 3-4 minutes later a loud tone comes out of it. It's not 60 cycle hum.

Besides tubes, I'm thinking it might need the capacitors replaced. What is the feeleing about recapping a "vintage" amp. One music shop owner told me not to do it. He said the caps are part of the sound and not replace anything that didn't need to replaced.

What your perspective?

I'd advise to replace the power cord if it is a two prong one and the filter caps, but for everything else if it doesn't need to be replaced, don't do it. Keep the old ones if you do replace them. Replace the tubes and see if the problem persists, and if it does, take it to a tech to check it out and see what the problem is.

I agree with above. No reason to keep parts in the amp that are bad. Sounds like a grid resistor though.

Thanks for all the comments. I will replace the tubes and see how that changes the sound. Then go for filter caps.

Still, if the tech replaces the capacitors in the signal chain even with equivalent values, it can change the sound of the amp, making it sound more modern.
