Need some help identifying a Fender bass cabinet I've had for about 30 years: contains 1x15" and 1x18" speaker, and is a sealed design with tolex covering and Silverface cloth. I believe it is a 1970's model that has been re-worked many years ago so it's hard to know if it was a 2x15 that has been modified or what. My real need is to replace torn grille cloth, but I can't figure out how to do that. It has the aluminum frame all the way around the front of the grille but no apparent way to remove the grill either from the front or from inside the cabinet. Unit is approximately 48" tall, maybe 11" deep and somewhere on the order of about 30" wide. Any help would be great.

Hi CW, your cab sounds like it's a '68 drip-edge. The baffle board should have wooden cleats along the side, top, and bottom of the cab. I've never removed this particular baffle board, so there is the outside chance that the board is set into a slot in the bottom of the cab. After removing the speakers and screws from the cleats, I would run a putty knife between the cleats and the board, to make sure it's free. Then a few taps all the way around the board should free it up for removal towards the front of the cab. Since you will be replacing the grill cloth , I would cut away the old cloth all around the edges.(I would do this before starting on the inside) This should give you a good view of the construction technique used to fasten the board to the cab. I believe you'll find a sub frame surrounding the front of the board. Hope this helps and work patiently. Art
