Dampers work, and as far as tubes go, in some cases you get what you pay for and in other like Groove Tubes, you don't. Cryogenic tubes are hype, you don't need gold pins either. I've had tubes that have lasted 20 years and they didn't have gold pins.

Tube dampers do work in many cases to reduce or eliminate tube rattle. You don't usually need them if you run a head and cabinet. I highly recommend in combos especially the Fender HRD series.

I've always had good luck with Mike K at kcanostubes.com for my Fenders. Email him with your amp, playing style/tone goals, and budget, and he can recommend some great tubes.

I've always liked JJ's, TungSol, Winged C's, but for a Bandmaster, I'd look for some NOS tubes. GE, RCA, Sylvania. It just depends on your taste and budget.

FWIW - what I will be retubing with for my Bandmaster later this year from JJ tubes:

V1 - ANOS GE 12AX7
V2 - already have a JAN Philips 12XA7WA - clearly audible improvement over the harsh/bright JJ tube.
PI - Mullard CV4024

6L6 - either the GT 6L6 GE's or the SED 6L6GC's

Tremolo - doesn't matter, my JJ is working in there so no need to change (JJ's often don't work in that socket, so I got lucky)
