Hey guys,
On the preamp tubes I was just looking in Tube Depot and saw where SRV used a 5751 replacing the 12ax7s. This would be great at ome just wondering how much quieter it would be. With my Deluxe reverb Ive been
8 plus on lead riffs in medium club which still gives me 2 what do you think.
Or give some advice on preamp tubes. Just started heavy in the blues couple years ago wish I had'nt waited so long Oh well.
Also would you still go with the 2 12at7s?
Thanks Raggs

Yeah Raggs, the 5751's are great tubes, but getting kind of pricey. I prefer a RCA or Amperex in the first input section(V2). The JAN spec'd GE or Phillips in the phase inverter position(V6) has worked fine for me. The volume and gain difference depends on the tube that is being replaced. If it's a good Mullard, RFT, or RCA, then yeah, you'll notice the tone and gain change, big time. IMHO That first tube that the guitar signal sees, really determines it's character throughout the whole amp. That's why I don't mind saving up for a RCA 7025 or RCA 5751 Command. As for the reverb driver(V3) I'd use a 12AT7 and a 12AX7 (V4) for the reverb recovery and last gain stage. These two should be good quality tested tubes. V5 just needs to be a functioning 12AX7, no signal passes through it. And V1, if you only use the Vib channel, doesn't even need to be in the amp. Just something to chew on. Art

I've played BF DRs for years and have used just about every tube substitution you can try. Most of the time the differences are so subtle that it isn't worth the effort...only if you have plenty of tubes to play with.
I've read that about SRV using a 5751,but in the phase inverter slot.I might even have one in there now,I'd have to look, but what happens is you will swap them around play for awhile and either like it or not....simple as that.
One thing I have noticed is that NOS tubes have been sorted through by everyone who has had them go through their hands, whether they tell you or not.And with that being said you can pay high prices and get tubes that don't sound good. All tubes are microphonic to some degree, they don't last forever and in different amps and different positions can sound good or terrible.

Thanks for the feedback. Art are you numbering valves from right to left looking at the back of the amp? Sounds like it want to verify.

Thanks Raggs

Very cool, Raggs, I like the sound of working in a vintage music store. Actually, I'm not a native. Moved here when I was 21, grew up in the Santa Monica Mts., Calif. I did work as an amp and guitar tech in a music store after I retired for a year or so, but the work that came in was anything but vintage. Oh well. Art

Trust me Art I don't work there for the money. I'm semi retired so I've got some time on my hands the discounts can't be overlooked though. Last week Jim from jimsguitars.com was in there working on a old 3 pickup SG I think from the 60s. He sold a lespaul to metalica weeks ago they sent him a plane ticket 1 for him 1 for the guitar $300,000.00. Seemed like a nice guy. Think he's from PA. check out his site he's pretty resonable I thought. www.jimsguitars.com
PS. Just went to site to check the address and the SG was the 1st guitar on there I don't care for SGs actually it did sing though. He had the first 3 guitars with him played all was very cool just saying.

The only guy I know in my area who I trust to work on my vintage amps,is a retired guy.I'm learning as much as I can from him,and have done more work on my amps lately.
The local music store usually has for their "tech",some young guy who has no clue what is inside a 1960s BF Fender.
I hope to be retired in a few years also,so I can help my sons or anyone who has vintage gear to either repair the problem or find someone capable of doing so.I'm sure there's somebody in Nashville, but I don't need them yet.

I'm with ya rebelsoul Guido (chitown) that owns the store I part time at wanted me to learn some amp stuff. Now I've got some skills but amps are an animal all their own IMO. When I finally took my DR to the real amptech he showed me alot of stuff. I can do tubes, set bias and have repaired a couple of amps. Fixed a reverb tank on a twin and by luck took loud hum out of a Epi 30watt (screamer) wire routeing, and found bad tube in mine but to do a absolute mystery diagnosis I'd be lost for now anyways. I can't help myself though (:
