Eye Opener - that's the only thing I can describe it as. Yesterday I finally got my 72 SF Pro Reverb plugged in and took her for a spin. FedEx had her since Friday, but life got in the way, and life is most important.

For the past 15 years, I've been playing a Blues Deluxe and I thought all along I had a guitar amp. Yesterday made me realize it's just a toy. The Pro Reverb's tone had a depth to it, nice tight bottom end - and the cleans...man oh man the cleans. I've never spent as much time as I did last night just playing strat > amp as opposed to strat > pedalboard > amp.

I mean I really shouldn't be knockin the BD so much, it's been by my side for 15 years. But in all honesty, after running through every flavor of the month dirt pedal for the past few years, searching for THAT tone, I should have listened to the elders when they said "start with the amp".

Anyway, Happy New Amp Day to me. Oh and check out the pimp custom cover this guy had made for it:

Wiz, very cool. The Pro Reverbs were incredible amps. Now you know what the real "Classic Fender Sound" really is. What are the mods? I don't remember the extra knob in the back. You could get it Blackfaced too. Do you know if it's been re-capped? If it hasn't, after 35+ years it's due.

Don't worry about the BD comments. IMHO It's entirely true. I've been saying it all along. I had HRDlx and it was not only a headache reliability wise, but I could never get the tone I wanted out of it. I bought it because I wanted something different, but when I took it on gigs is when I heard all it's tonal limitations. So I got rid of it.
I've had lots of old Fenders because I'm a Geezer and they weren't old at the time, and you're right, the tone isn't there in any of the HRD series amps or older or newer BDlx's.

I know tone is all subjective and In defense of everyone that thinks that the HRD series amps are the mutts nuts, they need to try an older Fender amp not to buy it, but to have a tonal reference. The boutique builders like Dr Z and Carr etc. and semi boutique builders like Egnater are hitting the nail on the head with old school designs but putting their own cool twists on things. If it's a modded amp, the mod or feature set need to be innovative not just tons of gain with a white noise option LOL. Egnater has the tube mix, watts control and and bright and tight switches all very usable and unique features.

I hope you have nothing but good luck with your amp.

Disclaimer: This is only my opinion and I'm not out to hurt anyone's feelings and if I did, I apologize in advance. :D

The knob on the back is a reversible mod to add a mid control.

The previous owner says it's been recapped and has had "some" blackfacing mods - not sure what that means, but he seemed like a real helluva a guy, so I have no reason to doubt him.

Maybe one of these days I'll open her up and snap some pics...I won't know what the heck I'll be looking for, but I'm sure there will be plenty of SME's out there who could tell me.....

Blackfaced amps are silverface amps like yours that are brought back to the famous Blackface amps like the 65 reissues Fender has now. The face color is the color of the faceplate for the control panel.

Blackface amps are considered to be the cream of the Fender crop. If the mod works for you that's great. Recapping means replacing all the electrolytic capacitors with new ones. It's a maintenance thing and brings the amp back to new specs.

Sounds like you have a really sweet amp.

thanks for the response, but i think you misunderstood my comment - i know what "blackfacing" is...i was just unclear on how it could referred to as having "some" blackfacing - i assumed either it's blackfaced or not, no in between.

either way, i'm loving the amp.

Wiz, nice amp! The Webers are great speakers for vintage Fenders. The partial conversion probably is a change to the bias circuit. The CBS amps had the hum balance circuit, pre CBS had the adjustable bias control. The addition of a mid control is very cool,IMHO. I adjust the mid frequency response on my old Fenders internally. Your set up is much more user- friendly. I'm sure you'll enjoy that amp for many years. Art
