I have a 1962 Bassman, 6G6-A, head. The power transformer is a 125P5B, date code 606149, and is fried. I cannot find any info on this particular transformer, nor can I find any doing a search.

I am thinking of having it rewound, but, not sure what specs this tranny has. Or is there a suitable replacement. I would like to keep it original as possible.

Everything I find out about this amp just continues to confuse me. Everything looked original in it, but, some of the resistors don't match up to what the schematic shows them as. The tranny numbers don't match up to what I see should be in there from the transformer cross references. I was told that this is a "transitional" model amp.

When I got the amp, the tolex (only a little on the sides and under the corners and mounting slides) and grill cloth (only where it wrapped around the grill wood) were mostly gone. The tolex was black and the grill cloth was a silverish cloth. I have come to the conclusion, from info I have found, that this should be a blonde with oxblood grill cloth.

A little info on the amp:
Date stamp - LA
Serial # - BP01680
Power Tranny - 125P5B / 606149
Output Tranny - 125A5A / 606146
Choke - 125C1A / 606133

I bought this amp back in 1984, for $20.00, so it has more than gotten it's use out of it.

Any help / info would be greatly appreciated.

Getting a power transformer should not be a problem. Just contact: Edcor, Pacific, Mercury Magnetics, or Heyboer. Your numbers look good for a 1961 vintage manufacturing date. Of course you'll want to make sure the rest of the amp is straight before trying the new trannsformer. Art

I am doing a re-cap on it now, as the filter caps started to dimple and I had a shorted diode in the rectifier. I will be going over the whole circuit to make sure nothing else is bad on it.

I am thinking a rewind would be the best course of action on the tranny. Any suggestions on who is the best for doing it?

Can't help on the rewind. But you'll have to find an audio fanatic to get the correct materials and work done. Are you just concerned about keeping it as original as possible? Art

Yeah i would like it to stay as original as possible, but, i know 40 some odd years later, it can be tough to do.

Yeah I hear what you're saying, but for the rewind, the core, wire, and leads would all be changed, right? I suppose the laminates may be saved and the end bells, but it wouldn't be original. You know what I mean? It is an interesting way to go, though. I replaced the PT, OT, and choke in my project '68 Bassman with Mecury '63 clone iron and it reacted quite well. Art

If your tranformer is fried someting is wrong ( short) in your amp.

Better to check before put a new xfrm in it ( $$)

You can buy replacement by Hammond Transformer (made in Canada).

Yeah, I found one shorted diode. so I replaced them all and have new capacitors, for the Bias and Filter circuits, on the way. I am going to also check the rest of the amp for anything else that may be wrong, before putting a new tranny in it and risk blowing that up too.
