I have inherited an old 8 string Fender double neck lap steel. Iam trying to find out about the year, value and folklore that goes along with these old guitars. My gramps used to call it a Hawaiin guitar ,though he like old country. It's chocolate brown and has a great case. It has a pat# it is PAT.2.838.974. As soon as I figutre out how to load the pics I have I'll put them on. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Isaw one earlier on this site that lookedlike the first one ever built . That is so cool.Keep on rocking.

The very first Fender guitars were lap steel guitars. They were first made in the early 40's, usually sold together with a tweed amplifier.

Does it look like this?

RaginRich, your grandfather was correct. Steel guitar has its origin in Hawaii. In the same way that disco infected all types of music in the 70's and rap found its way into everything starting in the 80's, Hawaiian music did the same thing in the early 20th Century. The steel guitar players who did cowboy music and country music 75 years ago were trying to imitate Hawaiian music. All those bluegrass dobro players can trace their musical influence to Hawaii.
