I've been lusting after a Champ ever since I got a chance to plug in a 57 reissue a few months ago.

Anyway, there's a vintage 70's SF Champ that I could pick up for around $350 and I was wondering what the differences are between the tweed Champs and the SF era Champs (aside from a bass and treble knob). Is there much difference in their tone?

Tweeds are very dynamic, meaning if you hit the strings hard, it distorts, hit the softer and it's pretty clean. It's very different, they also don't really like being cranked to full volume. I have a 74 Champ and I love it. Plenty loud for practice/recording and just sounds great. The 57 Champ reissue IMO is way overpriced for what it is. You could build one yourself for a third the price. You can buy an original for around the same price. If you can try a SF Champ I think you'll be surprised.

So the tweeds tend to overdrive better than the Silverfaces? Unfortunately the amp would be purchased from a distance (which I swore I'd never do but there's never anything local). Like I said, I loved the sound of the 57 reissue, so I'm curious how close the SF era are.

I have seen some amp builders who'll do 5F1 clones for about 2/3rd the price of the reissue.

It depends on the kit. The guys on www.thefenderforum.com can explain the technical differences. Tone wise I like them both, but they are very different.
