Besides the fact that it will no longer be stock?

My '71 DR is going into the tech tomorrow to remove a master volume mod and XLR output mod. The guy also does blackfacing. The amp does sound nice as is, but I can't help but wonder how the amp would sounds if the circuit were converted to blackface specs.

Can anybody comment on their experiences of converting a SF to BF specs?

Thanks.

Just a little cleaner and a little tighter. If you don't like it, it's reversible. You could always have the tech save the old parts for you.

I had my Bassman head convereted by Brinsley Schwartz from Chandlers Guitars in Kew. That guy really knows his stuff and did a top job. Words can't explain the difference and I'm crap at that but I love it.

It refers to the color of the amp's panel, as in tweed, brown, blonde, blackface, silverface.

I'd say while he's in there cleaning up the other stuff, go for it. Have him also check and replace any resistors/caps that are out of tolerance.

Not if you're talking Fender amps.
Go for it, you can always change it back but I doubt if you will.

I told the guy to go ahead and Blackface it when I took it in. Hope to have it back this week!

Carl, prejudice and racism has no foothold here with these folks, but tolerance does. I don't have a problem with talking about these matters, been around the block and over the bridge. Words can be insulting, but it's the actions we need to watch. Let's not take the words the wrong way. Art

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Don't worry, Carl. Blackfacing is Urkel-approved.

I would say the only reason to not blackface would be the master volume. I dig having the master to keep the amp level down and being able to overdrive the amp. This is just a preference tho. I've seen and heard the older Reissues with all the digital jazz and it did not sound as good as a straight blackface. Again that's just opinion.

The master volume's not a big deal. My Twin has a MV with the boost. The boost is horrible and using the MV seems to make it sound bad too. I always kept the MV in 10 at all times.

Maybe Art knows if you can Blackface and still keep the master volume in the circuit.

The Deluxe Reverb(and Princeton Reverb) amp didn't get the dreaded CBS bias circuit change, like the larger amps did. So the CBS changes really come down to a few things: 1) suppression caps on the power tubes. 2) PVC wire. 3) lead dress of the wiring. 4) down graded coupling-decoupling caps. 5) downgraded tone caps. 6) pig-tail shielding. These are what come to mind, and could be considered minor when looking at some of the CBS innovations over that period. As far as the master volume goes, IMO there are some decent designs (Ken Fischer) to be used, and if the ground switch is removed, fairly non-invasive. It will be interesting to find out how Led Zep's amp turned out. Art
