I have a '65 Reissue Deluxe Reverb and am thinking about getting a THD Hot Plate for it so I can get better tone at low volumes when practicing. I have not seen much info that these attenuators cause any damage, but thought I would ask if anyone here has any advice.

Is there another similar attenuator that folks here recommend?

Not that I've ever heard of. The only time you'll see a problem is if you use an attenuator that's rated at say 50 watts and you use it on a 100 watt amp. Just be sure it handles the wattage of your amp. Also There are five different Hot Plate models 2,2.7,4,8 and 16 ohms, and even though they all perform the same function, you’ll need to pick the one that matches your amp’s impedance.

Be aware that if you run your amp flat out all the time, you'll go through tubes more quickly. But that's the only thing I can think of. I never really liked attenuators because they seem to mess with the tone. You need to try it for yourself. Red the instructions carefully before you hook it up.

Get the 8 ohm version and you'll be fine.

If you'd like to spend less and don't mind having one internally mounted to the side of the amp, the Dr. Z BrakeLite is $170 and does the same job for less. One less box to have to cart around. However, it is open backed, so the downside is you can't use it on multiple amps.

The THDs are really designed for higher wattage amps. Some of the functions don't work as well with low wattage amp like the DR. They really are meant to be used with amps of 40 watts and above. I had some issues with mine and emailed the factory and that is the reply that I got from them.

I would look at the Weber Mass attenuators b/f you buy the THD, especially the speaker motor Webers.

Hi
I have the Marshall powerbrake the weber minimass and one I made myself. My amptech says they are the fastest way of trashing the OPT running it flat out through an attenuator. I have stopped using mine.
