I'm about to check out a 1964 Bassman head. It has no tolex, no faceplate, and no grill. Is $500 a good price? If not, what would be fair? Also, are there certain things I should look for to make sure it's legit? I know it's not a collector's item but I only want the vintage Fender amp sound. I may spruce it up one day, but I don't care how it looks if the electronics and tone is all original. Thanks!

Hi,

500 is too much.... Take into consideration, that Fender doesn't produce spare parts for this particular amp (as far as I know), so, no faceplate, no grill cloth...

I really wouldn't get the amp, I know it's tempting and it's a cool amp... But you know, you also have to ask yourself, if the owner stripped of the tolex, and the faceplate, and the grillcloth, what other stuff did he do to the amp? Messed around with it?

Post a pic. The going rate for that Bassman head with all the items on it that are missing from yours go for about 500.00-600.00. I'd pass on this one friend. I've got a pristine 65 with the 2-12 bottom cab that I only paid 725.00 for......Hope this helps.......... 8) Mike

Wow, I'm glad posted here first. I had no idea the going rate for a decent one was already $500-600. I kept seeing ones on ebay or craigslist in the $1000 range, and figured that was the normal price. I think I'm going to lie in wait for a deal like your's Mike. Thanks to both of you for saving me from buyer's remorse! :D

I'm glad I was able to help, mate...

You know, it's always tempting as %&% when you get the opportunity to buy a vintage, sought after piece of gear and one can't always keep his head clean... So just take a moment and look at the facts....

Cheers

Yeah, the asking price is high. But if you or a tech could verify that all the chassis parts are '63-'64 vintage and the amp works, I would negotiate. Seems like someone was intending to refurbish the head cabinet and lost interest or funds for the project. You never know what the amp is worth until you do a close inspection. Then the numbers start to clear up the haze. Art

Almost every part imaginable for old tube amps are available, if not from fender then from Angela, Mojo, etc. Don't let the spare parts issue discourage you. Cosmetics are fixable, but if some clown has modded the amp or it's been damaged, then it's another issue. If you can have a knowledgable amp tech look at it before you buy, all the better.

I bought my '65 Bandmaster off eBay and it was a wreck. No knobs, incorrect power transformer, but it was also at about 1/2 the price of what you're looking at and I knew it would need work. All the parts to fix, from new pots, jacks, transformer and caps, were all readily available. I now have an excellent BF Fender that sounds amazing and I was happy with the price.

I do know what you mean, but if someone had already the courage to take all the knobs, grill cloth, etc. etc. off the amp, chances are, this person might have also fiddled with the inside of the amp... And if you don't have a trained eye for stuff like that, chances are you'll have to pay so much more than when getting a decent amp..
