Back in the 70's I traded a bandmaster in on a new PS 400. It was sold as a Bass Amp with a 1-18' folded horn cabinet But it had Reverb and Vibrato. The thing was a Monster 435 watts RMS and I had a wall of speakers 2 4-12 cab's and 1 2-15 cab. that I used. My first wife put me in the poor house and I ended up selling it for dirt (Should have sold her) Just wondering if anyone had ever seen or used one.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

That's not the original. It's solid state and the original was a 2 channel all tube with tube reverb and put out 435 watts rms It had its own roll around stand for the amp head cuz it was so stinking heavy. The original cabinet was a 1-18" rear facing folded horn that was about 28" wide by 28" deep and 5' tall. The Amp head was 32" wide. I still have the stand. lol

Yeah, the 400 PS is one of the great amps, designed and built by Fender. In a class by itself for high powered bass amps. If I were a bass player, I sure would have checked them out. Almost all of the bass players I've worked with used one of the Ampeg tube amps, but some used the Black Face Bassmans or Showmans. All great sounding players and amps. But I've always wondered what those monsters sound like. Actually, the 300 PS is the amp that seems like a neat one for gigging. Art

It was actually a pretty awesome guitar amp too. I used to drive 2 4-12" and 1 2-15" cabinets. I was a little off on my dimensions of the original cab and head. I just remembered the head was wider than the cabinet and guessing. I got the amp in 74, I was trading in a Bandmaster looking for a Dual Showman or Twin when they made me a helleva deal and my Tele sounded pretty good thru the 1-18" cab. I don't miss lifting that monster to the top of the speakers.

The inclusion of a guitar channel with reverb and vibrato is quite amazing. Ed Jahns in my opinion was a saving grace for the CBS amp design department. Can't imagine a large company even approaching the production of such an amp, today. I guess the legacy is left for the small dedicated builders. Hey, when you were using the 400PS, were you playing outdoors? Art

I used it just about everywhere. Indoor Football Stadiums, outdoor concerts on scaffolds, heck even a few raucous Rock- N-Roll Bars. I remember my pants legs moving like the wind was blowing them standing in front of the speakers. My ears remind me daily with the ringing now. I guess if I'd known then I'd only turned it up to 9 but 10 was to much fun.

Hey Nedodrama, thanks for the link. Those pic's brought back some good memories, The only band I'd seen that had one was Loggins and Messina. I worked stage crew on a few concerts in the early-mid 70's 8)

The 400PS has 6550 power tubes that were specially designed for that amp.
The Fender field guide link tells a lot about the amp.

It is really three amplifiers that can be run in tandem. There are three speaker cabinet outputs on the amp and you have use three cabinets to get the amp to run at full power.
Most techs don't know how to work on the 400PS, so if you get one be very careful who you have work on it.

I don't know about all of the users of this amp but I do know that Berry Oakley used one with the Allman Brothers.

It was sold recently.

HI - I have a PS400 (Head alone is 84 Lbs...and wondered if you still have the stand (I know, you already said you do)....what condition it's in; and if you would like to sell it....where you're located ; does it break down for moving/shipping,etc.

Please use my secondary, 'junk' email address, and put "400 PS Stand" in the subject line,ok?

That email address is guitronics@yahoo.com

Thanks.
