Hello all,

I've been having some issues with my silverface twin (the 135 watt, push/pull master volume version). I'm thinking the issue is with the speakers (which i'm pretty sure are the Utah's), but i'm a complete newb when it comes to understanding speaker technology, so i was wondering if anyone would be willing to answer a few questions:

1) The issue is that certain notes buzz all the time, regardless of amp volume. The buzzing is clearly emanating from the right side of the amp and not the left (when facing the front). This is probably due to cracks in the speaker cone, right? Is there an easy way i could check this?

2) If the problem is in fact the right speaker, would there be any problems if i just replaced that speaker and not the other?

3) What would i need to know about power ratings? Since the amp is 135 watts, would i need a certain wattage speaker? What about ohm's?

thanks in advance for any help

You can look visibly with a magnifying glass, but also check the cabinet for anything that could be causing the buzz (hardware, etc). Also check the wiring as it sounds like a faulty ground. Each speaker is wired in separately.

There should be no problems as long as the same ohms speaker is used.

Yes, ohms matching is important, but now they have output matching devices to correct any differences. If the amp is rated at 135 watts RMS, each speaker might be moving about 65-70. A 100 watt speaker would be fine to use as long as the ohms match.

Any tube amp can handle a 100 percent mismatch, although the preference is usually to go for the low mismatch (4 instead of 16 for an 8 ohm OT).

I have the same amp, had the same symptom. My issue was loose speaker nuts. Make sure they are all tight but don't overtighten. You don't want to warp the speaker baskets.
