I just finished up working on one of these with reverb and vibrato issues. The RCA jacks that connect the footswitch to the amp were frayed and nasty. The reverb side was shorted (ALWAYS making contact) so when the footswitch was connected there was no reverb. I replaced the RCA and now the reverb works as it should. As for the vibrato, the internal wiring of the footswitch demands the reverb and vibrato connection be plugged in as it connects to the ground side of the reverb in the switch and (of course) the ground sides are common inside the amp.

I also had howling and it too was all about the cables. This time the cables connecting the reverb tank to the amplifier. I used deoxit applied with a toothbrush to clean all these RCA connects and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Cleaning the pots is easy and is a no brainer whenever I hear crackling in the controls. Understand how to discharge capacitors and learn how to clean them in your amp and it'll be a fix for some other stuff as well (your stereo, TV, etc)

It's usually the easiest solution (no promises) with stuff like this.

Mike- congrats on a great purchase. For the price of a 6-pack...

Tubes - did you replace just the preamp tubes, or the power tubes as well? Normally when you replace power tubes, you need to rebias the amp.

Given the amp is 30 years old at least, it's a good idea to bring it to a shop and have them look it over, replace the filter capacitors and see if anything is out of spec. The good news is that a SF Deluxe Reverb is easy to work on, and parts are readily available and not that expensive (barring boutique/esoteric caps/resistors, etc.)

Enjoy and good luck.

As far as a speaker choice goes, I like the Celestian AlNiCo Gold. Similar to the old Blue but smoother. Nice chime and breaks up nicely when pushed.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
