I noticed that the stock 12AX7 tube in V1 can impart a fair bit of 'noise' or 'hum' at high volumes and frequencies. A quieter tube might be in order. I changed mine to a GE JAN 6072A and the background hum was eliminated.

Thanks for that info, i'll see if i can source that type of valve and go from there. I checked around some of the suppliers locally and have had no luck so i might have to try the internet. cheers

I am having the same issue. I hear an annoying hiss when the mid's or treble is up. If i totally cut them out, the amp is silent. Any resolution?

Hi folks. I think that pre amp circuit could use some NOS tubes. For V1 I'd try either a 12AY7 or 7025. For V2 I'd try either a 7025 or 5751. If you can only afford one of these tubes I'd go for the 7025 in the V2 position. This tube is a cathode follower and powers the tone stack. But keep in mind if V1 is a noisey tube, that noise is just amplified throughout the following gain stages of the entire amp. The 7025 is a low noise 12AX7, pricey but will last for many years. Just a word about Mullards, Telefunken, Tungsol, and RCA, some of these tubes are noisey. But they can produce the most complex and pleasant sounds when being played. IMHO A little background noise is a small price to pay for great tone. Art

I'm using NOS GE 5751 in V-1 and the reissue Tung-sol 12AX7's in v2 and v3

So far excellent tone and no extra noise.
