Hi everybody! This is my very first first post here and I wanted to know more about my amp. I have a silverface Fender Pro reverb that I'm not sure about its year made.
I looked over here: http://www.ampwares.com/amp.asp?id=181
From what I understand from this, it's made before 1980 since it's a silverface and it has a master volume so it's definitely one of the later models. I don't find a 5U4GB on the tube chart in the amp, so I guess it must be from '78 or '79.

The serial number is F 916110

Judging from this is this a 40 watt or 70 watts model?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Mike, You're the bees knees! Thank you!

I just noticed on the back it says 70 watts RMS. Is this a totally different rating than how the power section is rated? I'm going to re-tube it and want to know what to rate the two power tubes when I'm biasing it.

Since I'm going to be getting new tubes I was wondering which of the pre-amp tubes need to be balanced. I know that the two 6L6s need to be matched. I also modded the bias section to adjustable bias instead of balanced bias if you need to know.

From the tube chart I have the following pre-amp tubes from left to right:

12AT7, 12AX7A, 7025 (Which I understand is a 12AX7), 12AT7, 7025, 7025.

I was thinking of getting all JJs since that's what I have in my Marshall, but if they're something better in that price range that you like better feel free to let me know.

Also, if anyone has recommendations for substitutions for the type of tubes that you like instead of what it says on the tube chart, that would be nice as well.

Thanks!

Hi Omeed, the 7025's are low noise 12AX7's. Don't think there are any currently manufactured ones( maybe EI). The phase inverter(12AT7) should be a matched dual triode, for best results. You could try a NOS 5751 JAN GE or JAN Phillips in this position. You could try a matched 12AX7 in this position, for higher gain, but the 12AT7 has a higher current handling capacity than the two previously mentioned tubes. If all of the other tubes are quiet and working fine, you might want to get a nice NOS 12AX7 for V2 , if you only use the Vib. channel. The idea is to have the signal see a quality tube at the start of it's path through the amp(know what I mean?). ART

Thank you so much for your help, Art. Is the tube furthest to the right V1? Also, is the 12AT7 furthest to the right the phase inverter?

I can NOT tell you guys how help full that BOOK they advertise on top of the page THE SOUL OF TONE 60 YEAR OF FENDER AMPS can be.

It has EVERY AMP FENDER ever made, it';s schematics, a CD to hear the real deal vs the re-issues.
They tell you how to DATE THEM, what tubes are used STOCK and what tubes can be changed to due what.....

They tell you how to DATE your amp what speakers came with it and what were the options.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE for the VINTAGE AMP BUYER or for the guy looking for a new amp.

Just remember the sound ya hear is coming through your HOME SPEAKERS so what ya hear may not be the sound you'll get with your AX in your house.

I really can NOT recommend this book enough it's well worth the 50.00bucks !!!

It can be bought here or at WWW.JKLUTHERIE.COM along with a ton of great books.

DAN EARLWHINE just put out a great 3rd ediiton on fixing and how to set up your ax.... this is a must have for the beginner to the advanced who works on his own ax

Hope this can shed some light

BTW does your amp have the PUSH /PULL master VOLUME???????

Hi Omeed, the tubes are numbered V1-V8 from right to left, as viewed frpm the back of the amp. V-1 amplifies the normal channel and it's controls all the way to the phase inverter(V-6). V-2 amplifies the Vibrato channel and it's controls , part of this signal goes to V-3(12AT7) which drives it through the reverb section.V-4 recovers the reverb signal and the rest of the Vib. signal amplifying it again on it's way to the phase inverter.V-5 works an oscillator section that, if activated, will cause the vibrato effect on the signal, just before the phase inverter. Got to go! Art

Hi ,again,if it's OK ,I'll continue my basic discription. The phase inverter section(including V-6) then splits the signal into two seperate mirror images, with a 180 degree difference in phase and time(frequency). These signals are then driven to seperate sides of the power amplifier section(V-7 & V-8). The output tranformer combines the two images and converts them into a voltage that can drive the speakers. This discription is just my overview of the amp and certain to lack many technical aspects of operation. Hope this helps you, Omeed! But you probably knew all this any way. ART

Thank you, Art! No, I didn't know the role of each preamp tube. I love this stuff. I need to know more about servicing my own amp. Thanks for dropping this knowledge!

Hi everyone from a confused and ageing Brit over the Pond here in London seeking any kind advice.

I too have a silverface (I think) Fender Pro Reverb 40W amp with vibrato / reverb pedal, I think the serial number is "A 19590" (that is stamped on the chassis) and there's a paper sticker saying it was made in Fullerton (I think); I've always assumed it to be an old 'surfer's' amp, might anyone know what year it hails from?

I've loved using this fabulous piece of vintage Americana, I have hopefully taken good care of her (all RCA valves only I assure you); my rock and roll years are over and as I'm in this juicy field of pasture I'm contemplating passing the old girl over to the younger generation (if they still use amps? Perhaps it's all just mp3 samples by now?), so any trivia they might quiz me on about it would also be gratefully received!

Anyway thanks for any responses
