Hello.
I didn't read alot of the replies, so I'm not sure if this is old news.

The Guitar: You've got more less the right strat. (1962 re-issue?).

Technique: I'm no purist and I don't go by reading about chord shapes and fingerings and all that. If you want to be influenced by his playing, listen. (This depends what sort of guitar player you are).

Amps: If you want to spend alot, the Fender 1964 Vibroverb re-issue would nail the sound but its way to expensive. Theres also some more what are expensive still such as the Twin Reverb, Super Reverb, Vibrolux and even a Fender Bassman. A cheap alternative would be the Fender Blues Junior what works suprisingly well and you can get one anywhere from £300 to £400. I'm after one of these for rehearsals and for club gigs.
EDIT: And a very good, quite affordable alternative would be a Deluxe Reverb.

Strings: I'm expecting this to be very old news from some other replies, but you'd need heavy gauge strings. If you don't want to go to heavy, .11 gauge strings would be fine to start with.

Pedals: TS9 or TS808 Ibanez Tubes Screamer and a Vox Wah-Wah. Also a Fuzz Face won't go a miss.

Thanks for all the info, and a good link.

I was thinking about a Blues Junior, but I figured I'd buy something that I wouldn't want to replace in a few years so I started looking at the Deluxe Reverb 65' reissue. Would that be okay for playing at home, and maybe some small gigs?

TB, you're starting to ask the same questions over and over again. The answer is, in your situation yes.

I'v had a go on a Deluxe Reverb in a studio and it was reasonably loud. I'm sure it would be fine for playing at home, but its the type of amp you can really crank amp for a gig.

You're not going to "nail" his sound with a 64 Vibroverb RI. He never exclusively used the Vibroverb any way. He usually had something like 30 amps in the studio at any given time. I hear people say they nail his tone all the time. It's really laughable. SRV could use a Marshall, Fender, Vox amp as well as a Strat or a double neck Dano and still sound like SRV.

I bet it's more a combination of the sweat, hat and plume.

Well some people can't afford 30 amps. And he did, especially in the early years, almost exclusively use Vibroverbs as well as others (especially live). I know he used all the amps you mentioned, but to get a very similar Amplifier tone without using about 30 amps, a Vibroverb is very reasonable.
