Silverface Deluxe Reverbs are still affordable too.

I hear he used a 64 vibroverb a lot, why wouldn't I go with that, or a super reverb? whats the difference between a twin reverb, and a deluxe reverb?
Siize and volume.Fender has a list of their amps with specs and sound clips on their site.

Between 60-80watts. The Twin won't break up without you going deaf, the Super Reverb will. He used a lot of amps. If you have the means, get whatever you want. Some folks attribute his tone to his huge strings too. He was using 13's. I tried them, but they started messing the tendons in my hands up pretty quickly. Personally, and everyone is different, I don't chase other peoples sound. I develop my own. I have a couple of off the wall guitars that help me achieve this.

I think the best amp to try and nail his tone with would be either the Egnater Rebel 20 or 30. If you can't find his tone in there, you'll never find it. You can mix tones between 6v6 and EL84 power tubes. It does the Fender, Marshall and Vox thing really well. I've been playing for 40+ years and had a lot of amps and the Egnater is the freshest thing I've heard in a long time. As soon as I sell my HRDlx, I'm picking one up.

+1 on '63.

First SRV did use a LOT of amps. Bassman, Vibroverbs, Champs, Dumbles, Deluxe Reverbs, Marshalls... pretty much anything he could get his hands on. The, the sound you're chasing was further affected by mic choice and placement, pre-amp choice, post effects, the mix....

Secondly, why the hell do you want to sound like him anyway? There are 12 million guitar players all Vaughning the crap out of the same short list of tunes (the next guy I hear playing that pointless instrumental version of "Little Wing" at GC gets a punch right in the face, I swear)... why be one more?

Don't learn to play "Little Wing." Learn to play the guitar.

+2 With Slapchop. LOL I know what you mean. I was at GC tring to listen to the Egnater and there was a guy Vaughning through a Garbage sounding Line 6 head with a 4x12 cab. What a wanker. I was looking to buy, he had no intention of buying that amp. I had the sales guy move the Egnater to another room. It's just like the guys way back wanking Stairway To Freebird.

A lot of musicians try to emulate their heroes. I figure I'll chase my own sound because Ill never capture that sound. It's limiting your potential anyway. No disrespect intended to SRV, but he had certain signature licks that he played over and over again.

It was his tone and the authority in which he played them that made him famous. Johnny Winter IMO is a much more versatile guitarist as was Rory Gallagher.

AHHHHHHHHH!!!! I stay out of big chain music stores on weekends or I go to Georges Music who won't let you just grab guitars of the wall and wank.

I'm not trying to piss anyone off or anything..but damn, I'm just looking for a new amp. Trust me, if you were in my position you would probably be doing the same thing. I'm playing a '62 Strat through a peavey transtube sometimes, and a Marshall Dfx. I'm just looking for a good verstatile amp that I can play the blues, Srv, and make my own music with..and something that I wont want to get rid of for a new amp in a few years. Yes, I'm only 15, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't save up for a good amp, verses getting a medeocra 300-500 dollar amp. I don't have a job, but trust me I have my ways of making money..my budget right now for a amp is anywhere between about 1500-2000. I really need something different then what I listed above lol..

I would check uot the Fender Deluxe Reverb either on ebay or new in the store. The reason we are trying to steer you away from the Super Reverb or the Vibroverb is because they are damn loud.If you are living at home there is no way you will be able to play it so that it sounds good.A15 watt or 22 watt tube amp is WAY louder than your transtube amp or your mg.I would rather see you get something you can realistically play out and at home than be always worried about turning it up.I have 4 amps and i know how this can be a problem.

No problem. We gave you some suggestions, but it seems like you're stuck on the what amp did SRV play thing. Some of us have been playing a long time. I've got over 40 years on the guitar. Doesn't mean I'm a great guitarist, just a lot of experience. But I have guitars and pedals more than twice your age LOL. If you're looking at Fender, I'd go with a DRRI or a Super Reverb, Bassman RI etc. I tried a Marshall Haze 40 briefly and that's nice too. The Egnater Rebels are real nice too. I'd stay away from Blues Jrs, and the Hot Rod series and lower priced ampsin general. Unless you like replacing them every few years.

You really don't need anything over 45 or 50 watts. For one thing, the stage volume gets too loud and hard to manage because everything starts coming through the monitors and messing up the mix. With the kind of cash you can get hold of, I'd look for a Silverface or Blackface Super Reverb or Deluxe Reverb. Twins are just way too loud unless you play outdoors a lot. or large stages

Remember, the lower the wattage tube amp you can get away with, the more you can push it and not go deaf and get incredible tone. I have had Tinnitus for the last decade. It's no fun having whistling in your ears every moment of your life.

Take our suggestions, as a starting point, then go play a ton of amps. Fender, Marshall, Mesa, Ampeg, and Egnater have fun and see what works for you.

No one on the forum has the definitive answer except, you will never duplicate SRV's tone.

Yeah I see what your saying, I didn't realize how loud the Super Reverb reissue was. How many watts is it? Also, could I use one of those artentaor things that controls the volume so you can crank it on your amp panel? Sorry for my spelling, I'm sure it's spelled wrong..I had one saved in my favorites but I have too many research pages and whatnot saved lol. Would that work out for me and a Super Reverb reissue? Does it effect the tone at all?

Sure you could use an attenuator to throttle the sound down, but they do change the tone quite a bit and they are pricey.I started out with a 60 watt solid state amp and was looking for something lighter, someone had me try out a 15 watt tube amp and i couldnt believe how muchlouder it was.The rule of thumb with tube amps is "less is more".What i mean is tube amps need to be played hard in order to sound really good.So get something you can crank and that amp will sing.Go to your nearest music store and try a bunch out .You will be glad you did.

The beauty part of the Egnater Rebel amps is you can dial them down to 1 watt without killing the tone. Attenuators really kill the tone.
